My daughter is a soccer player who tried out and made her school's B Team basketball team last year and again this year. Before last season, my daughter had never played a competitive game. She is playing for fun until club soccer starts up again in the Spring.

Last Year: about midway through the season, a girl joined the B team after getting demoted from the A team. She may not have been the worst player on the B team, but she would have been my pick. I asked my daughter how the girl could possibly have made the A team. She told me the coaches used a point system to determine who made the team. I let it go.

Last night: My daughter's team played for the first time this season. The girl was missing and I figure she hadn't made the team. Later, I saw the girl sitting with the A Team. When I asked my daughter about it, she said the girl racked up points shooting free throws and uncontested shots. As a result, she made the A team again. There are at least four players on the B Team who are significantly better than the girl who made the A Team.

My daughter said the points system was used to "eliminate bias." WTF!

Aren't BB coaches supposed to pick the best players?

I am curious, are other school systems using similar "points systems" to pick players?
