Just a comedy of incompetence on this one.
Quick summary.
Romania gymnast performed a more difficult routine and got a phantom deduction for stepping out which apparently not reviewable.
Chiles contested the difficulty of her routine two minutes after it was completed. Even though the cutoff was one minute. The contest was accepted and the score was correctly adjusted giving Chile’s the bronze.
Romanian appealed and requested both Romanian gymnast AND Chile’s receive the bronze
Olympic committee gives Chile’s the medal and four days later asked for
The errors here are many:
The phantom deduction
Miss scoring Chiles
Accepting the review
Overturning the acceptance (president for ruling at the meet prevailing)
But to me the biggest of all is stripping Chiles of her medal. Stripping a medal days later for no cause of the athlete is unheard of. What there is a history of is rewarding multiple medals when there have been similar controversy and everyone seemed cool with that outcome.
