I remember back in the day the classifications for TX high schools from smallest to largest was class B and then from 1A to 4A which was the largest. In fact the class B schools didn't even have playoffs.

Then in the 80's they changed it from 1A to 5A and this time even the 1A schools had playoffs. And eventually they had playoffs for second place schools.

So tell me what was the reasoning from changing from 2A to 6A? I'm sure TX politics played a part but I've gone for awhile. Explain it to me please.

It's all about making money. More teams in more playoffs equals more money for the schools. Pretty simple. High school football in Texas is more lucrative than college football for more than 80% of the colleges in the country. I might go so far as to say 90%. High school football is very lucrative while the vast majority of colleges are working at a deficit. Hell, middle school football is a big money maker as well. Middle school football makes more money that high school basketball and baseball. It's pretty crazy.

I can’t disagree with this. Having grown up in Texas and playing football in high school, I thought it was the norm. When I was in the Marines, my wife was a high school teacher and cheerleading coach. We went to high school football games in North Carolina and it was nothing like games in Texas. Seriously, their varsity games were like a freshman or JV game here in Texas. I was amazed by it. Friday Night Lights means something here in the Lonestar state... Not so much everywhere else.

UIL could remove rounds one and two of the hs playoffs and the results would be the same.

Texas hs football as a state is #1. This is why every carpet bagger from ou to tosu to bama are here.

But I don't understand how changing from 2A to 6A means more money.

Adding 6A classification adds an extra bracket. This means more teams play playoff games so there are more ticket sales and concession sales, etc....

This is the Aledo stadium. Aledo played an extra home playoff game this year and raked in the extra $$$.

The more classifications means the more teams make the playoffs. More playoff teams means more games, more games means more opportunities for schools to make more money.

But isn't it still 5 classifications? And each classification still have 2 champions just like before. It seems like it's just gone from 1 to 5 and now it's 2 to 6. Or is there a 6th classification now that's what confusing me. I mean i certainly the money part it's how many classifications there are that.I don't understand.

It used to be 1A was really small schools, now 1A is well still really small schools, but it is designated for 6 man football. In the past 6 man didn't have a designation, it was just 6 man. Now they are 1A.

Every classification has 2 playoff brackets, Division 1 and Division 2. It's crazy, it used to be that if you made the playoffs you had a special team. Now it just means you didn't totally suck.
