Texas offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert addressed the media during his weekly press conference on Tuesday. Here are the highlights from his availability:

- Gilbert said if you look at Kansas, the team has been in every game early, and a few until the end. He said if you watch the Memphis game, Kansas was playing with urgency, flying around and playing with an attitude. Gilbert said, “Their record doesn’t indicate the kind of football team that they are. They’re a good football team. They’re really good up front. They’re athletic. Like I said, they’re playing with a mission and determination.”

- Here is Gilbert’s take on his team's loss against West Virginia: “You just go back and they’re a really good football. That’s where I’ll start. We knew that. Stat wise, where they were in the nation defensively. Where they sat in the nation defensively. My personal opinion is they’re the best defense we’ve seen in the conference right now. We knew were going to have to fight and battle for every point that we were going to be able to get. Just room for improvement. We made some mistakes and didn’t execute the things that we needed to. That just goes back to we need to improve to get better. We need to be focused on that. We need to continue to grow as a young team, and when there’s young personnel on the field. Those are the things we’ve talked about that we’ve preached going into this week’s practice, and identify with our kids, and focus on us. That’s what I’ll take it back to. Our mission right now is for us to continue to get better. Just to continue to progress. We’re on a mission to do those.”

- When asked about the importance of making a bowl game, Gilbert said it is huge. He said considering Texas will have 37 of the 44 two-deep returning next year, Texas could have around 20 extra practices, which will help mold their young players for the future.

- Texas freshman receiver Collin Johnson’s understanding and knowledge of what the offense is doing schematically is why he has seen more playing time, according to Gilbert. In addition, the game speed has slowed down for him, and Johnson is playing with more confidence.

- Gilbert’s message to his players has been to keep battling, especially considering four to the team’s losses have been by seven-points-or-less. He wants to keep fighting, try to get better, be focused and disciplined. Gilbert said, “When you play in these one possession games, and they’re losses, or they’re wins, when you go back and evaluate it, it's going to come down to five plays or less in the game that really tilt that thing one way or the other. What you do is you’re just understanding and knowing situation football, continue to be focused, understand and know what you need to do schematically, and just continue to battle. Just continue to fight and continue to will yourself to win.”

- Gilbert said receiver Devin Duvernay is a young guy who is continuing to grow when asked about the lack of targets. He said just like Johnson, Duvernay has to continue to get better every week.

- This is Gilbert’s first year at Texas, and he said you do not know or understand everything about a conference until you go through it. He is learning the environments at different stadiums. In addition, he is also working to grow the offense and get his group to where he wants them to be offensively.

- Here is Gilbert’s on quarterback Shane Buechle’s first season: “As I talked about it before, every rep is a quality rep for him, whether it’s in practice, or obviously on Saturdays. He’s seeing pictures that maybe he has seen, or hasn’t seen. He’s seeing situations that he’s seen or maybe hasn’t seen. Every one of those is just a growth rep for him. You just take every rep, every scenario, and you just put it in a bag as an offensive unit for Shane as a quarterback. You just pull that out and recognize it for the moment, or the situation. Have we been here? Have we done it? Is this new? Those are all teachable, learning moments for our kids. Those are things as coaches that we identify off of, that we coach off of, and that we teach off of.”
