Strong has to win 9 games next season

Neither Jesus Shuttleworth nor Wescott Eberts are reliable sources of information, and that coach Strong has to win 9 games is merely Shuttleworth's guess. A lot of unsupported speculative conjecture in those articles, not a lot of facts or sources on the record.

"My guess is that you’ll see a full court press this time next season that wasn’t seen last week for Cumbie if Strong stumbles to seven or eight wins in 2016." link

Let's see how we close out the 2016 recruiting class and fill out the rest of the coaching staff before we lynch anyone.

Hook 'em

I never know how much of the reporting is true. Nonetheless, if so, the BMDs need to give the team and fans some damn breathing room. They have plenty of time to deal with it after the season without leaking a bunch of suffocating negative energy. Do they truly love the university or do they just love themselves and the power they can flaunt. Mthr Fkrs.. Sorry guys, but, this crap is exhausting.

Strong needs to show progress, real progress. We need to not get blown out or shut out. We need to beat all the bad teams and some of the good teams. We need both the offense and defense to be top 50 or higher, that is not asking a lot.

Next year it's put up or shut up for Strong and his staff, that means taking a hand in every aspect of this team.

Thus kind of crap is the reason the players are so uptight every game. These reports do nothing to help the team! If the media and fans would get behind the team instead of making ultimatums maybe they will play better. Every season the same shit. If you focuse on the negative then you will never reach your goals. Let strong work and see what what happens!

I agree DHHorn. However, the players should not get caught up in the media hype, whether it be good or bad. My coach always told us, "don't read the press clippings." He warned us that it is dangerous to believe you are really that good (perhaps incapable of losing), and it was ridiculous to believe that you are that bad (in incapable of winning).

Your right, however it's unrealistic to think the players will not read the press about them. The last thing this team needs is reason to say "well, everyone wants us to fail so why even try in the first place" they need to focus on getting better and have realistic goals so they can be proud of something and build on that. All they hear right now is how the big guys who they probably have never met and don't know anything about the inner working of the team wants to fire their coach. I hope they can respond better than I would because I get the feeling the first thing that goes wrong it will send the team into panic mode. I don't think you can play too well if in the back of your mind you are thinking if you mess up your going get your coach fired.

I agree DHHorn. It's a lot of pressure for young college football players. But, I have confidence that our players will support their coaches and teammates. I'm optimistic about our offense next season. We also need to lock up a solid recruiting class this year to see the type of winning Texas teams we are accustomed to seeing on Saturdays.

Just take a look at the comments under that Eberts' post. There's not a more useless "source" than Shuttlesworthless. This is almost universally known. You do realize that he's basically just been a fan fiction writer for the last four or so years, right?

That "story" is 80% bullsh*t. (And that's probably being charitable.)

Tight?

I don't even think they showed up in some games. Like TCU and ISU, and that shutout loss is pretty unforgivable.

I don't know if Strong is gone after next season. But I wholeheartedly agree that this team needs to show serious improvement and consistency. Some of the records losses and blowouts and statistical ineptitude shouldn't be happening in year 2 and can not carry to year 3.

As for the idea that we'd go after Cumbie as the HC. I hope not. I'd rather a proven guy. Or if we go unproven, I happen to think Herman is a star in the making at UH. And he has interest in Texas. I don't think the timing works out where we get him. As I think he goes somewhere big after next year at UH. And I don't think Strong will be fired at the end of next year. I think the moves on O will help this team and I think he gets the D together.

But for me to be satisfied, they need to improve next year. And 8 or 9 wins is not asking a lot. And the year after that, we need to start competing for CCs and playoff births again. Not mediocrity and missed bowls.

The source is IT, not BON..who are repeating what IT posted. My source says it's a dynamic situation with no specific # of wins. Just a general conclusion re how Charlie is doing with new coaches and recruiting and basically just being a head coach.

UT is pressure. This is TEXAS. Strong has had two seasons to work, and it hasnt worked out. The third year cant be a glimmer of hope. It has to be real, fundamental improvement. It was his choice to bring Watson with him, and many horn fans rightly booed that decision. Strong made some poor staff choices, and now he gets one year to get it right. Either we see marked improvement, or he needs to go. TCU went from 4-8 to 12-1 in one season, in the Big 12. If Strong cant take Texas to at least 8 wins, he needs to go. Pay him and Gilbert and Maddox to make it worth their while, but they dont get 3 more years to see if they can figure this out.

Ha! I just tagged both you muh fuggas as comicon dorks!!! I'm laughing my ass off now!
HaHa! I honestly feel better now that our season is over & have realistic optimism looking forward. Less stress & a light hearted approach makes everything better, even on a message board.
Merry Christmas muh fuggas!

This team needs positive momentum. Not all this negative stuff surrounding them. Shit like this is part of the problem. Every time a player is interviewed they look like a whipped dog. No confidence and you can tell all they want to do is bury their head in the sand. Yeah Strong screwed the offense up with his hires. Now he has brought in a young dynamic OC to help fix the problems. The narrative should be that they have faith in Strong to turn it around and not all this skeptical BS. I'm not saying he shouldn't be fired if there is no improvement, but at least show support while he is on the payroll. If they can't do that then they should have grown some balls and fired him after the season. All they are doing right now is holding him down which will not help him win any more games.

Truth and skepticism brings about change. I have optimism for the O. But I can also be honest and say that if they don't fulfill expectations, they are running out of chances and it will be time to look elsewhere. I hope they figure it out.

If this is true........the players need to stop eating Sallys cookies and hugging Mack and grow up........errr I thought Strong was going to toughen them up. Wouldn't want them to hear the truth on a messageboard......that being they need to play better and more consistent and start to win a little.

If hurts their feelings to hear that a losing season is unacceptable.....then we have already lost. This is football, not a beauty pageant.

They have my support. Financially by holding season tix and buying gear. And emotionally. And if I had eligibility left, I'd get out there and sweat with them. But I can't. Posting the stark reality on a messageboard is called being honest. Not being unsupportive. Go buy a bra if it upsets you.

Being supportive is telling the truth.

If your friend is doing a crummy job at work and you just pat him on the back and say it'll all be ok and he gets fired.....is that supportive? Is that helpful to him?

Or is telling him to do a better job more helpful?

Is it ok if a recruit says the truth? Even these 'kids' get it.

“I am very, very interested in Texas,” said Williams. ‘It’s at home. What gets better than that? There’s nothing better than being at home, why leave if you can just stay home? That just makes it easy.”

Williams visited Texas for its Thanksgiving game against Texas Tech, and what he saw only reaffirmed his interest in the Longhorns.

“It’s a very nice campus,” Williams said. “I love everything there. I love what Charlie Strong is doing. He’s bringing a new vibe to the program.”

Williams stayed through the whole game on his visit and enjoyed what he had to see from Texas freshman running back Chris Warren.

“That was crazy,” Williams said. “We stayed through the whole game, and when he broke that long one, that was crazy.”

Williams wasn’t familiar with new Texas offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert yet, but did say he planned on learning more about the new offense making its way to the Forty Acres. He’s hoping to see a more efficient offense from the Longhorns next year.

“I honestly just want to see a better offense,” said Williams. “Maybe find a stable quarterback who can lead them. Quarterbacks are leaders, and it makes it kind of hard to do with a couple of them. I think their running game is great, and they’re going to get it figured out.”

There is nothing being written right now that hurts Texas recruiting as much losing 7 games.

This.

Winning cures all.

I still support Strong. I have faith he could turn it around. I like the OC and OL hires. And yet I can still be critical that I think guys like that should have been hired years ago and we might not be were we are now. And that is on Strong. I have faith this might be the fix we were looking for. But I am no longer 100% certain Strong is the answer. And as such, you have to set expectations and they need to be met. And you need to have distant ideas as to what the next fix could be. And I am someone who HATES yoyo'ing coaches around. It creates a self fulfilling prophecy of losing recruits and losing games. That being said, other guys could have come here and made a bigger impact on the field right away. Other teams have had fast turnarounds with less talent.

I believe Strong is a very good recruiter and player developer. I used to think he was a good X's and O's guy. I wonder now a bit about that.

This is exactly how I look at it too. jsto60 you got it right......I will support whoever the coach is but I can also be pissed we are getting blown out and not showing up to some games. The Iowa St. game kind of broke the camels back for me. I like Strong and I HOPE he gets it going. I have serious doubts about his hiring ability and his game management. He had every opportunity to hire a GREAT staff when he got here. That is on him not on mack or patterson. If the players want Strong to be the head coach they need to start playing like they did against ou. They can't complain Strong is getting pressured and then lay eggs. Step up and PLAY.

There were a few games. Getting smoked by TCU. ISU was almost unforgivable. And looking at BU, we were lucky to beat their 4string QB who was really a WR in their system hadn't taken a snap since HS. They came out after the half and ran the wildcat and we ran our 3-3-5 with corners playing 10yds off in coverage, the nickel back 12 yds back and the safeties rolled back somewhere up in the stands.

Shocking that our defensive staff and defensive minded HC refused to put more men in the box or press the slot coverage in a pinch down mode. We often held BU to field goals after they romped down the field...when we went to goalline D. Crazy that they didn't try that 90 yds further down the field. BU wasn't even trying to show any passing routes and yet we still played back like they had a Heisman QB carving us up. Instead they were gashing us in the run.

Inconsistent performances like that last year (see Arky bowl game, TCU, BU, etc) were somewhat expected. Not in year 2. And not when we played so well in other games (see OU). You can't keep being inconsistent going in to year 3. And you can't get blown out in games you should win and dominate.

I want the coaches to succeed. And like the new hires. I am just setting the bar at what they need to do. A third year of failure is not acceptable. And I was on the train of give whatever new coach we hired 4 yrs to fix it. But not if they continue to show such blatant inconsistency and set embarrassing records for futility.

That's the bad. Now there are bright spots. How about utilizing them and growing them? I am looking forward to seeing that happen.

Ive supported Strong completely and have stated he needs three years. He will have #3 next year. Blowing things up after year two and starting over doesnt = another 3 years. Again, there must be marked improvement, not just talk. If TCU can go to 12-1 after a 4-8 year where they change the offense, in the Big 12, then Strong can certainly go 8-4 or 9-3. If he cant, then its time to go.

It's really not shocking. It was a deliberate strategic choice. It's not like the coaches were simply unaware that they were running an outnumbered front or something. I'm not saying that it was the best possible strategic choice, either, and we obviously can't prove anything one way or the other. In the end, though, it worked well enough, and if the offense had done anything in the second half, it would look pretty damn smart in hindsight.

Bedford simply wasn't going to allow freshmen making freshman mistakes -- and with no help behind them -- to give up a big gain or quick TD. At one point we had seven freshmen (six true freshmen) in the back seven. I can very well understand the fear of giving up the big play in those circumstances -- and that doesn't have to come only by way of a long pass. That's not an unreasonable fear at all. Yes, maybe we shut Baylor down completely if we don't let them outnumber us, but there's also no denying that the risk would have been far higher that a BU player tear off a long TD run. Making Baylor burn clock to get yards on the ground doesn't look as bad in that light.

If the offense had managed even just a single TD (or even two FGs) instead of only a single FG in the second half, then we wouldn't be having this conversation. Instead, we only managed to run 15 total plays in the four drives aside from the FG drive.
