Most of the times, prospects do a good job of keeping everyone updated of their recruiting timeline. Be it on Twitter or Facebook, recruits usually like to announce set times for commitment dates or times when they’ll release a group of favorites.
Every once in a while, you’ll have a player announce his news out of the blue.
Hello Morice Blackwell.
The Arlington Martin linebacker pulled off a Sunday surprise, announcing on Twitter that he had verbally committed to the University of Texas.
“Thanks to God for the talent he has blessed me with and all the University’s that extended and offer to me. I’m blessed to have many options but after a lot of prayer you have decided to commit to The University of Texas,” Blackwell wrote.
A 6-1, 195-pounder, Blackwell becomes the Longhorns’ ninth commitment in the 2021 class and UT’s first linebacker commitment. He held offers from the likes of Alabama, Baylor, Notre Dame and Arkansas at the time of his commitment.
“Blackwell, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound versatile linebacker, was the District 4-6A Defensive Newcomer of the Year and the league MVP as a junior in 2019. He’s an outside linebacker by trade, and thrives playing off the ball, but has the ability to also battle inside,” said Rivals.com recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman. “Blackwell is a stout run defender able to crack inside and battle in the trenches and make big stops due to his speed off the edge. He’s a sure tackler with big-hit ability to jar the bar loose and force turnovers. Blackwell makes a ton of stops from the edge in the run game and flashes signs of being a dangerous pass-rusher from that position.
“What makes Blackwell stand out is his exceptional sideline to sideline speed. He can cover a ton of ground in a hurry, and that shows in coverage as well. Blackwell positions himself well on the field and can dart to the ball inside or out in space. He’ll be a three-down linebacker in Austin capable of contributing against the run, pass and on special teams.”
Texas’ class currently ranks No. 13 in the Rivals.com team rankings.
