I was going to also include “these days,” in the title, but hey, it’s ALWAYS great to be a Longhorn!😎
But these are the days why you remain a diehard fan. It’s why you weather years like 2010-2021.. Tradition of excellence and hope.
I became a fan in 1987. I grew up in El Paso and didn’t really know the University. My family emigrated largely from Mexico and my Dad was the first in our family tree to go to college— he went to what was then the Texas College of Mines, now UTEP. I had no idea I could get into a place like Texas. He moved the family to Austin in ‘87 and that’s when I fell in love with UT and the Longhorns.
But as many may remember, those were some dark days. Aggie did in fact own the state as far as football was concerned. But I loved me some Horns, and I worked my butt off to get into UT; and once that happened I was in fact an Orangeblood for life.
Other than the “Shock the Nation Tour” we were pretty hapless until John Mackovic and it appeared he got things turned around. But then we and he fell flat on our faces.
Then came Mack Brown. The Golden Years from 1998-2009. Those were great times. But we all know what transpired for the next 11 years. And then came Sark.
In the last 2 years we have won a major football championship, and are posed to win another — this time in arguably the premiere athletic conference in the country. We are set to play in the CFP for the 2nd consecutive year. Ranked #2 in the country. Recruiting is as strong as ever and the cupboard is full of both outstanding talent and young men. We are led by not only great coach, but a seemingly really good, humble man, who makes us proud both on and off the field.
And Texas is back among the elite. These are heady days my friends. Heady indeed. Enjoy them. Savor them. Embrace them. Because like anything in life, times change. Don’t forget to be grateful for what we have in this program, and all the people that have strived to bring this about.
And beat the hell outta Georgia!
