Opponents of the proposed $1 billion retractable-roof stadium to replace Globe Life Park in Arlington as home of the Texas Rangers have gained a new ally as Election Day nears.
The Tarrant County Republican Party approved a resolution Thursday night opposing the city of Arlington’s commitment to pay up to $500 million toward the project using public financing.
The resolution recites part of the party’s platform: “We oppose all bailouts of domestic and foreign government entities, states and all businesses, public and private. We oppose local government handouts to businesses and other private entities in the name of economic development.”
Voters will decide Nov. 8 whether the city can help finance the stadium by redirecting a half-cent sales tax, 2 percent hotel-occupancy tax and 5 percent car rental tax, which are now paying down what’s left of the city’s share of AT&T Stadium construction costs.
The resolution was written by two county GOP officials who also are leaders of a political action committee Citizens for a Better Arlington — Faith Bussey, who is PAC president and a GOP precinct chairwoman, and Warren Norred, who is PAC spokesman and a GOP parliamentarian.
Bussey said the resolution was approved by an “overwhelming majority” in a voice vote of roughly 100 members of the Tarrant GOP’s executive committee.
The amount of anti-stadium support the county GOP would deliver is unclear. The resolution “directs our County Party Chair to utilize reasonable Party resources to assist efforts to oppose this government handout.”
“It could mean we get access to phone banking,” said Andy Prior, media liaison to the PAC’s opposition campaign, Save Our Stadium. “Or it could mean actual money support, or it could mean we might get the support of volunteers for block-walking purposes.”
