The Texas Longhorns currently have two wide receiver commitments in the 2021 recruiting class, but the UT staff is looking to add more talent at the position. Recently, an offer was extended to Chase Jackson, a receiver out of Choctaw (OK). Jackson, has been committed to TCU since early May. He remains committed to the Horned Frogs, but said the Texas offer definitely has his attention.
“I’m still committed, and it’s still strong,” Jackson said of his TCU pledge. “But it’s definitely something to make me look back at my recruiting process. You always have to keep an open mind with Texas, any school that offers. I’m not a closed book.”
The contact with Texas started last week, and things moved pretty quickly with Texas extending the offer shortly after the two parties began talking. UT wide receivers coach Andre Coleman made the call to deliver the news of the scholarship offer.
“He said they’re looking for a big-time wide receiver,” Jackson said. “They got the number one quarterback in 2022. He texted me and said we need a big-time wide receiver and asked if I would be interested.”
A 6-2, 173-pounder, Jackson feels one of his best assets is his versatility. He’s equally comfortable working out of the slot or on the outside, prides himself on having good hands and is a willing blocker when the ball isn’t coming his way.
“I bring being an all-around player to the table. I block when I don’t have the ball in my hands. I’m good off the line. I love getting pressed. My off the line, my acceleration is good,” Jackson said. “I’m good at tracking the ball because I’ve played every position possible growing up. I can catch almost any ball, will lay out for any ball. I feel I’m an all-around player. I want to improve catching the ball with my hands. I only dropped three balls last year, but I caught with my body. I want to get rid of that, high point the ball so I can catch on the run better.”
Texas expressed an interest in getting Jackson down to Austin for a visit at some point. With it being a recruiting dead period, that opportunity won’t present itself until later in the fall, at the earliest. In the meantime, Jackson said he’d be interesting in doing a virtual visit to get a better read on what Texas has to offer. It’s not ideal, he said, but you have to take what you can at this point.
“I’ve done those with Minnesota and Eastern Michigan. They’re not bad, but I’m kind of bummed out. My whole life wanted to go get these offers, go to games as a recruit.”
As for his decision to commit to TCU, Jackson said it was a childhood dream of his to play for the Horned Frogs.
“TCU, for my whole life, I wanted to go there,” Jackson said. “It started off I liked their mascot, liked their colors, liked that it’s a Christian university. I like everything about it. They’ve been telling me, they want me to fill (Jalen) Reagor’s role. He played in the slot, played outside. They told me they like my size, like my speed. They said I’ll be playing in the slot and inside, just like Reagor. That of course lights up your eyes and they want me to come in midterm.”
Jackson is ranked as a three-star prospect and is the No. 12-ranked player from the state of Oklahoma.
