The chatter from coaches across the land over the past two hours has been that Jeff Brohm is more likely to agree to a new contract at Purdue than to jump to Tennessee at this time.

Working off the assumption that is likely, which we’re told it is, sources with knowledge of Tennessee’s plans tell FootballScoop the Vols intend to pivot to NC State head coach Dave Doeren. In five seasons at NC State, Doeren has posted a 31-29 regular season record (wins per year: 3, 7, 7, 6, 8).

NC State peaked this season, starting 6-1 and rising as nigh as No. 14 in the polls before dropping three of their final five games.

Earlier today USA Today’s Dan Wolken wrote about Doeren being at odds with his administration and seeking the Ole Miss job. (Ole Miss hired Matt Luke instead). In securing his eighth win this past weekend, a trigger in his contract automatically added another year to his contract at NC State; but even with this new year added, he only remains under contract for the next three seasons.

Doeren went 23-4 with two MAC championships in two seasons at Northern Illinois before leaving for NC State after the 2012 regular season.

Tennessee fans nearly rioted when word broke that then were about to sign Greg Schiano. Hopefully they take this better.
