BOX SCORE

RECAP

It was cold, windy, and misting rain throughout. The game started with an error and Dartmouth had the winning run on base, but in the end, the Horns came away with a game win and a series win.

After an error to start the game, a wild pitch, and single, Dartmouth took the early lead, which included some shaky defense. Coach Schlossnagle wanted to get Casey Borba some at-bats, so he plugged him into the lineup at 2B. Unfortunately, baseball has a habit of finding you and it certainly did early on as Borba had some struggles defensively at a position he does not play naturally.

In the Bottom 1st, it looked like the Horns might have a great day in the box as they got back to back hits from Belyeu and Flores, followed by a walk by Adrian Rodriguez. Despite a wild pitch scoring Adrian to tie the game up, the Horns could not capitalize and keep the offensive momentum going.

Over the next few innings, the Horns offense sputtered as they could not find any rhythm offensively and struggled to put consistent at-bats together to take the lead.

This allowed Dartmouth to take the lead in the Top 4th as errors and wild pitches again came back to haunt the Horns defensively.

The Horns struck back in the Bottom 6th to tie things up though as Will Gasparino hit an RBI single up the middle to score Adrian Rodriguez who had hit a 1 out double the prior at-bat.

After notching his second 1-2-3 inning in a row by Andre Duplantier, the Horns offense was able to scratch out a lead behind a 2 out single from Kimble Schuessler and a fly ball to no man's land by Max Belyeu that dropped in, allowing Kimble to motor around and score.

Things got interesting in the Top 8th as Duplantier was replaced with a runner on 2B, who had reached by an error, and 2 outs. Will Mercer came in and walked the first batter he saw and then was lifted for Max Grubbs with a 2-0 count on the next batter. Max Grubbs came in and threw a first pitch strike, but then plunked the batter to load the bases. Unfazed, Max Grubbs threw three straight strikes, getting a strikeout to end the frame and threat in the 8th, preserving the Horns 3-2 lead.

In the Top 9th, Max Grubbs came back out, looking to close out the game and earn his first save of the season. He gave up a lead off single that was hit deep to the hole at shortstop and then walked the next batter in a competitive at-bat. Schlossnagle stuck with him though and was rewarded as Grubbs got the next batter swinging, then induced a pop fly to shallow RF and a weak ground out to Kimble at 1B to end the game.

Despite nasty weather, the Horns came away with the win. At the end of the day, that is all that matters!

BIG MOMENT

In the Top 8th, the bases were loaded with two outs and Texas was clinging onto a one run lead. Max Grubbs hunkered down and threw three straight strikes, getting a swinging strikeout to end the threat and preserve the lead.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

Andre Duplantier - hat tip sir. He came in and battled for 3.2 innings to help settle the game and help get the Horns the win. Over the 3.2 innings, he gave up 1 hit, 3 K, 12 batters faced. 0.00 ERA

TAKEAWAYS

Tough conditions all around. The offense is still working its way into things and the pitching rotation is still looking to settle roles. There are always going to be good days and bad days, that is life. The team over came the conditions and did enough to win. Onward.

NEXT UP

Texas (4-1) will look for the series sweep against Dartmouth (0-2) tomorrow at 12pm
