RECAP

It was cold. It was windy. The Horns won.

In the Top 1st, LHP Jared Spencer gave up a lead off single and issued a 2 out walk, but also got a pick off at 2B to end the frame.

In the Bottom 1st, Kimble Schuessler led off with a single to CF, followed by a single to RF by Max Belyeu, which advanced Schuessler to 3B. Jalin Flores hit a sac fly to LF giving the Horns an early 1-0 lead. After Adrian Rodriguez flied out to RF, Will Gasparino drew a walk. Tommy Farmer his a double to left CF scoring Max Belyeu to give the Horns an early 2-0 lead.

In the Top 2nd, Spencer got two quick outs, but then walked batters back to back, but battled back to get a strikeout to end the frame.

In the Bottom of the 2nd, Schuessler collected his 2nd hit of the day with 2 outs, but the Horns came up empty.

In the Top of the 3rd, Dartmouth again got the lead off man on base, but could not take advantage, though the 1B ump made a mistake calling the play at 1B an out, when he should have been safe (no harm, no foul right).

In the Bottom 3rd, the Horns went down in order 1-2-3.

In the Top 4th, Spencer gave up a lead off walk, followed by a single up the middle. A sac bunt moved runners over 90ft and a fielders choice to Flores allowed the first run of the game for Dartmouth to score making it 2-1 Horns.

In the Bottom 4th, the Horns again went down in order 1-2-3.

In the Top 5th, Spencer got the lead off guy out, but then issued a walk, and at 80 pitches on the day, Texas made a move to the bullpen. In came Ruger Riojas who got two outs to end the frame.

In the Bottom 5th, Ethan Mendoza led off with a walk, then stole second and advanced to third on a poor throw to 2B by the catcher. Kimble Schuessler flied out to CF, allowing Mendoza to tag and score making it a 3-1 ballgame. Despite getting two more walks in the inning, the Horns came up empty and could not add anymore to the lead.

In the Top 6th, Ruger sat Dartmouth down 1-2-3 quickly and efficiently.

In the Bottom 6th, Tommy Farmer collected his 2nd double of the day and advanced to third on a fly ball to CF by Easton Winfield. Rylan Galvan grounded out to 2B, but it was enough to bring home Farmer to make it 4-1 Horns. Ethan Mendoza collected another walk and Kimble Schuessler hit a double to put two men in scoring position, but Max Belyeu struck out looking on a 74mph curveball.

In the Top of the 7th, Ruger Riojas again sat Dartmouth down 1-2-3 as he collected a pair a strikeouts.

In the Bottom of the 7th, Dartmouth went to the bullpen and LHP Danny Will put the Horns down 1-2-3.

In the Top 8th, things got interesting as Ruger gave up back to back singles to lead off the inning. A fly ball to foul territory in RF that was caught put runners on 1st and 3rd with just one out. DeMastrie followed that up with a hard hit ball to 1B which Kimble knocked down, but it got away from him and his toss to Ruger at 1B was wide, allowing a run to score. The next batter, Nico Banez then hit a single to CF to score a run making it a 4-3 ball game. After Ruger plunked the next batter loading the bases with just one out, Schlossnagle turned to Thomas Burns who got a strikeout and a fly ball to end the scoring threat.

In the Bottom of the 8th, the Horns got a 2 out walk by Rylan Galvan, but then allowed Dartmouth out of the inning as Galvan decided to try and steal 2B inexplicably and got thrown out by a country mile.

In the Top 9th, Thomas Burns gave up a 1 out walk, but battled and got back to back fly outs to slam the door and preserve the win for the Horns.

BIG MOMENT

Thomas Burns came into the game with the bases loaded and just one out and got a strikeout and a popup to end the scoring threat and preserve the Horns 1 run lead in the Top 8th.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

Three names in consideration for this, between Kimble Schuessler, Tommy Farmer, and Thomas Burns.

I'll go with Kimble Schuessler as he goes 3-3 on the day with 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 2B. He was the catalyst for the offense today, though Tommy Farmer absolutely made his impact felt offensively.

TAKEAWAYS

Nasty weather, but the Horns pull out the win. Spencer wasn't super sharp, but did strike out 6 and held Dartmouth to 1 run. Ruger was incredibly sharp for two innings, but struggled in his third, similar to last weekend. He may be a 2 inning guy at the moment, but I do give some leeway due to the weather.

NEXT UP

Texas (3-1) v. Dartmouth (0-1) at 12pm (scheduled, but could change due to weather) as the Horns look for the series win
