Texas - 7
BOX SCORE
Winning Pitcher: Braylon Owens (3-1)
Losing Pitcher: Ruger Riojas (4-1)
RECAP
For the first time since opening night, when ironically, the Horns lost in extra innings to Louisville, Texas drops their second game of the season. The loss snaps a 17 game winning streak and will certainly provide some frustration to the hitters going into the LSU series this weekend.
In addition, the pitching was either amazing or not great tonight. The defense which had been so good lately for the Horns failed them to an extent tonight as the Horns committed two costly errors. Overall, not a great night of baseball for the Horns after the 6th inning where they really went cold at the plate and struggled to get any offensive rhythm.
Top 1st - Freshman RHP Drew Rerick got the start on the bump tonight and had a rough go. His first batter faced hit a ball into the wind for a solo shot to start the game off giving UTSA a 1-0 lead. Rerick then walked the next batter, who would advance to 2B on a wild pitch, and then walked the next batter. The four batter he faced, he plunked, loading up the bases and prompting Jim Schlossnagle to replace Rerick with LHP Kade Bing.
Bing came in and got a big first out as he induced a chopper to 3B Casey Borba, who fired home to get the runner trying to score. Bing then gave up a sac fly to CF, which scored the runner from 3B making it 2-0 UTSA. Bing kept the Roadrunners from doing any more damage though by getting a ground out to end the top half of the frame.
Bottom 1st - With 1 out and nobody on, RF Max Belyeu got a 1-0 pitch over the plate and crushed it to left CF, clearing the Yeti Yard to make it 2-1 UTSA. SS Jalin Flores would get a single and advance to 3B on a wild pitch after DH Adrian Rodriguez moved him over to 2B, but C Rylan Galvan struck out looking to end the scoring threat.
Top 2nd - LHP Kade Bing was back out and retired the side in order with ease.
Bottom 2nd - After two quick outs, LF Easton Winfield hit a single through the left side to put a man on. 1B Kimble Schuessler then hit a double to the gap in right CF to tie the ballgame at 2-2. 2B Ethan Mendoza then gave the Horns their first lead when he hit an RBI single to right field to make it 3-2 Horns.
Top 3rd - LHP Kade Bing was back out and retired the side in order again
Bottom 3rd - The Horns offense again put up a crooked number as Adrian Rodriguez drew a 1 out walk, following by Rylan Galvan getting hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up 90 ft on a double steal, and then both runners scored when Casey Borba hit a chopper to 3B who threw wide of the bag to give the Horns a 5-2 lead.
Top 4th - LHP Kade Bing was back out and retired the side in order again as he continued to cruise on the mound
Bottom 4th - Horns got a lead off double by Kimble Schuessler, but then failed to capitalize on it as Schuessler was caught stealing going to 3rd and the Horns failed to tack on any more runs.
Top 5th - LHP Kade Bing was back out and retired the side in order again in what would be his last inning worked. Bing retired 15 in a row allowing 0 H, 0 R, 4K on 59 pitches. Not too shabby!
Bottom 5th - In the Bottom half of the inning, Adrian Rodriguez got a hold of a pitch and crushed it to right CF to extend the lead to 6-2 Horns.
Top 6th - Freshman LHP Bryce Navarre came into the mound in relief of Kade Bing in the top of the 6th and that is where things went sideways. Navarre gave up a lead off single to start, but was able to get him out as Rylan Galvan threw a perfect strike to Jalin Flores at 2B to catch the runner trying to steal. Navarre then walked the next batter and then gave up a double to left field over the head of Easton Winfield to put runners on 2B and 3B with just 1 out. Navarre then walked the next batter to load the bases forcing Schlossnagle to go to the pen and bring in Thomas Burns.
Burns gave up a single through the left side on a hanging pitch to make it 6-3. Burns then gave up a sac fly to CF to make it 6-4, but with two outs. The next batter Burns faced then hit a double down the LF line, plating two runners to bring the Roadrunners within one run at 6-5 Horns.
Bottom 6th - In the Bottom half of the inning, the Horns were not able to respond as they went down in order, including back to back strikeouts.
Top 7th - In the Top 7th, Burns was back out on the mound for the Horns, but left a hanging breaking ball over the plate which was crushed to right CF off the video board for Caden Miller's second HR of the night, which also tied the game. The next batter then hit a single off the glove of Kimble at 1B to reach safely, prompting Schlossnagle to go to the bullpen.
RHP Andre Duplantier originally came out of the bullpen and was warming up, but stopped as Schlossnagle and the trainer went out and pulled him from the mound to bring in RHP Cody Howard.
Howard got strikeouts on the first two batters he faced, but a run would still score to give UTSA the lead as Casey Borba got a soft chopper, double clutched and air mailed a straight forward throw past 1B to make it 7-6 UTSA.
Bottom 7th - In the Bottom half of the inning, the Horns offense remain dormant as they were retired in order
Top 8th - RHP Cody Howard was back out to work the 8th inning and while he gave up back to back 1 out walks, he battled back to put up a zero on the board.
Bottom 8th - In the Bottom half of the frame, Rylan Galvan led off with a home run over the Yeti Yard and into the street to tie the game up at 7-7. Unfortunately, the Horns next three batters could not get anything else going.
Top 9th - RHP Ruger Riojas, the UTSA transfer, came out to pitch in the 9th inning for the Horns and quick retired the side in order.
Bottom 9th - In the bottom half of the frame, the Horns offense got a 1 out single from Ethan Mendoza, and a 2 out single from Jalin Flores, but that was it and to extra innings we went.
Top 10th - UTSA got the lead runner on in the top half of the frame as Jalin Flores threw wide of Kimble Schuessler at 1B on a tough play, but Ruger Riojas sat the next three batters down without giving up a run, walk, or hit to keep it 7-7.
Bottom 10th - After back to back outs to start the bottom half of the frame, Casey Borba drew a walk, following by a Will Gasparino single to LF. Freshman Cole Chamberlain was then inserted into the lineup in lieu of Tommy Farmer and as is he apt to do, drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Unfortunately, the Horns came up empty as Kimble Schuessler hit a deep fly ball to RF to end the scoring threat.
Top 11th - Ruger Riojas was back out to work the 11th inning and ran into a spot of trouble as he gave up a single and then a double to lead off the inning. Despite being under the gun, Riojas got back to back strikeouts and a ground out to end the threat and keep it at 7-7.
Bottom 11th - Jalin Flores would get a 2 out single to LF, but that was it as Adrian Rodriguez grounded out to the SS on the first pitch he saw.
Top 12th - After getting two quick outs, Ruger Riojas had the 9 hole hitter at the plate, but threw a breaking ball which saw far too much of the plate and the hitter was able to get it into the wind and dump it into the Yeti Yard to give the Roadrunners their first lead since the 7th inning.
Bottom 12th - Sadly, the Horns went out with a whimper as they were retired in order 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the frame.
Post Game Notes from Coach Schlossnagle:
BIG MOMENT:
With 2 outs and the bases loaded in the Bottom 10th, the veteran Kimble Schuessler came to the plate and got a pitch to hit. Unfortunately, it just wasn't Texas night as the ball was hit well, but on a line to the defender in RF to snuff out any late inning magic.
INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE:
LHP Kade Bing hasn't had the start to the season that he wanted. After being the Sunday guy for two weekends, he was replaced and hasn't seen much action since. Coming into a tight spot in the 1st inning of the game, Bing delivery for the Horns and gave them a chance to win.
5 IP, 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 BB, 4 K - it does not get much better than that. Bing shoved tonight and if he can continue to do that, his role will certainly expand
INJURY UPDATE:
I was told that RHP Andre Duplantier is fine and that he was removed as a precaution. He should be ready to go for the Horns this weekend, as they will certainly need him, potentially as early as Friday night.
NEXT UP:
The Horns are back in SEC play this weekend as they will host the #2 LSU Tigers for a three game series.

Post Game Notes from Coach Schlossnagle:
- Kade Bing - we didn't get off to a great start. He kept us in the ball game. We didn't throw enough strikes. Both teams competed. Texas got some breaks in Starkville and sometimes those things come back to haunt you. They did a good job. Ruger did a great job. Credit UTSA, they have a really good team. They used two weekend pitchers and that is what I would do if I were them.
- Everything happens in life for you, not to you.
- We didn't win the game but we got better tonight
