BOX SCORE

Horns split the mid-week series against Texas State, where once again for the third year running, the away team wins each game.

The Horns are now 20-14 overall and 7-5 in Big 12 play.

Winning Pitcher: Taylor Seay (2-0)
Losing Pitcher: Easton Tumis (3-1)

RECAP

On Tuesday night, the Horns went down to San Marcos and got things going early as Porter Brown crushed a 3 run home run to give the Horns the early lead and starter Chase Lummus battled back after a tough 1st inning to throw 5 innings of 1 hit baseball. While the weather prevented the Horns and Bobcats from finishing the game on Tuesday night, they did play the 9th and final inning on Wednesday evening, which saw Texas close it out for a 9-1 win.

Just an hour later, Game Two started between the Horns and Bobcats. Easton Tumis got the start for the Horns and for 3 innings, was very good on the mound. Unfortunately, Tumis ran out of gas in the Top 4th, giving up back to back walks and a single to load the bases after getting the first batter via strikeout. That is when things went pear shaped for the Horns as the bullpen, which has been very hit or miss this season, gave up the ball game.

Luke Harrison came in and immediately walked a run in, followed by a 2 run RBI single to give the Bobcats the 3-0 lead. Freshman RHP Cole Selvig then came in and immediately gave up a 3 run blast to RF, when he left a breaking ball ball hanging over the heart of the plate, making it 6-0 Texas State and putting the Horns in a deep hole.

In the Bottom 5th, the Horns got a pair of runs back to make it a 6-2 ball game, as Jared Thomas got hit by a pitch, followed by a double by Peyton Powell. Thomas would score from 3B on a wild pitch and then Max Belyeu would drive in Powell when he hit a double of his own, but that was all the Horns could come up with.

In the Top 6th, the Bobcats would get a run back as Hudson Hamilton led off with a walk, then gave up a double down the LF line that was extremely questionable, as the ball went foul, but the Ump ruled it came off Powell's glove. Andre Duplantier would come in relief and on the first pitch he threw, induced a fly ball to shallow LF, which was caught by Porter Brown. Unfortunately, Brown did not have enough mustard on his throw home and the Bobcats were able to tag up and plate the run, making it 7-2 Texas State.

In the Bottom 7th, the Horns would get their last run of the evening as Jared Thomas hit a 1 out solo blast to RF, his 10th of the season, to make it 7-3 Texas State, but the Horns again came up empty as Jalin Flores grounded into a double play, ending the frame.

On a night when the wind was gusting from left to right, the Horns offense looked completely off kilter, failing to get anything going and being very inconsistent. Horns got production from Thomas, Powell, Max, and Kimble, but no one else recorded a hit except for a lone single by Dee Kennedy.

BIG MOMENT

The 3 run home run by Alex Gonzalez in the Top 4th, who entered the game tonight with just two hits on the season, was an absolute back breaker. Once the Horns were down 6-0, you could just feel the entire game change and there simply did not seem like the Horns had a chance to come back and win at all.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

Jared Thomas went 2-4 on the evening with a HR and 2 runs scored, as well as a hit by pitch. The draft eligible sophomore continues to lead the offense for the Horns as he is still hitting over .400 on the season and now is 4th in the Big 12 in home runs with 10 on the season.

TAKEAWAYS

After winning the first game 9-1, it felt like the Horns could gain some momentum heading into the weekend series at Houston, the last place team in the Big 12. Instead, the bullpen will need to quickly forget this one and the offense will need to regroup and put things back together after an a loss to Texas State, which certainly does not help the already beleaguered Texas RPI.
