MUSINGS FROM THE DISCH

Seven Big 12 series completed. Three Big 12 series to go.

So far, the Horns have done nearly exactly what was stated they would need to do. Stack series wins. The Horns have won 6 of 7 series so far through conference play, positioning themselves in 4th place. Unfortunately, the Horns lone Big 12 series loss was to the worst team in the Big 12 (BYU) and the Horns have refused to win a Friday night game since early March. The other bad news is that other teams in the Big 12 have taken it upon themselves to get sweeps, in one of the wildest free for all's that I can remember in conference history.

As it currently sits, there is a 6 game difference (two series) between the 1st place team and the 9th place team. The difference between the 1st place team and the 5th place team is 3 games. In a year when crazy results have happened, a great example is Kansas sweeping Texas Tech this past weekend, anything can happen. The Horns should feel good that through their struggles this season, they are still in 4th place and only two games back from 1st place and only a game back from 2nd place. They should also be very concerned that they sit a mere game ahead of 5th place and only 2 games ahead of 6th place.

One bad weekend in the conference at this juncture can and will kill you.

Over the weather adjusted weekend, the Horns did exactly what you would hope for a team that is still finding it's way in the pitching department. Utilize the hot hand and rely on the bats to get ahead. By winning 2 of 3 against the first place team in the Big 12, Oklahoma, the Horns set up another massive weekend ahead, this time against the number two team in the Big 12, Oklahoma State.

The most recent polls have Oklahoma State at #14 in the nation, as they continue to their hot run.

Overall the Horns are 27-18 with 10 games left to play, 9 of which are in conference play. The Horns have one final mid-week game against Sam Houston on Tuesday. Based on the remaining schedule, home/away, etc., I can foresee a number of different scenarios playing out. In my opinion, the Horns will go 6-4 over their last ten games, putting them at 33-22 on the season with an RPI in the high 50s to low 60s.

Anything worse than 5-5 over the last ten games, I think it may be a real stretch to see them getting into the NCAA tourney.

Looking at remaining Big 12 series, here is what each team has on tap and where they are at in the current Big 12 Rankings. Looking at the remaining conference schedule, there are some absolute bangers left, which lots of potential for movement in the standings.
