ON DECK - The last non-conference weekend series of the season

One final weekend tune up. After this weekend series against Santa Clara, the next time fans will see the Horns at home for a weekend series will be on March 21st as the presumed #1 team in the nation, LSU Tigers, comes rolling into town.

Before looking that far ahead, there is still a weekend road series to Mississippi State, the first SEC series for Texas, in which the Horns will face 15-18K fans and bbq pits wafting smoke across the field.

Back to present though, the Horns have reeled off ten straight wins after an opening day loss against Louisville and are just a few pitches away from being undefeated. Regardless, the Horns must stay present and focus on the task at hand, a Santa Clara team that will be looking to snatch a road series against an SEC team. Offensively, Santa Clara is a team that does not appear to be strong, and they certainly do not hit for power, having only hit two home runs so far this season. They do have twenty-two doubles on the season but are averaging just 7.6 hits per game while averaging 7.6 strikeouts per game. On the pitching side, their starters have had mixed results, but they do have two solid options out of the bullpen. They do rack up strikeouts at a decent rate but have also issued a fair number of walks and given up 14 home runs on the season.

Coach Schlossnagle has talked about Texas being good but not good enough. They are good enough to play and potentially beat any team, but they are not good enough to beat any team when they aren't playing at their best. They do not have the ability to just sleep walk and out talent anyone.

Santa Clara is a good non-conference weekend opponent to help get the Horns tuned up for SEC play. The Broncos as mentioned have a pair of really good bullpen guys and the rest of their rotation are veteran guys with lots of experience, including their Friday night starter, who was an All-Conference pick last season.
