FINAL
Dartmouth - 1
Texas - 4
Winning Pitcher: Dylan Volantis (1-0)
Losing Pitcher: Nate Isler (0-1)
RECAP
The game certainly did not start the way starting pitcher LHP Kade Bing would have liked, giving up a lead off single. The good news is he immediately got a pick off at 1B to get the first out of the inning and game. Unfortunately, Kade walked the next batter, then gave up a single, threw a wild pitch, and gave up a fielders choice to give Dartmouth the 1-0 lead for the second consecutive day. Not the start that Bing or the staff were looking for. Thankfully, Bing was able to battle back though and get the last out to prevent any further damage.
The Horns looked to strike back in the Bottom 1st as RF Max Belyeu was hit by a pitch and then 3B Adrian Rodriguez hit a double to left CF putting runners on 2B and 3B with two outs. Unfortunately, CF Will Gasparino could not bring the runners home.
LHP Kade Bing settled in though as he sat Dartmouth down 1-2-3 in the Top 2nd and Top 4th innings. In the Top 3rd, Kade should have had a 1-2-3 inning, but had a breaking ball run in and hit the Dartmouth batter.
After going down in order 1-2-3 in the Bottom 2nd, the Horns tied the game up in the Bottom 3rd as 2B Ethan Mendoza laid down a bunt for a single and advanced to 2B on a poor throw by the Dartmouth 3B. With 1 out and runner on 2B, Max Belyeu came through in the clutch, hitting a single up the middle to drive in Mendoza.
The Horns offense went quiet again in the Bottom 4th as they went down in order 1-2-3, but bounced back in the Bottom 5th as 2B Ethan Mendoza led off the inning with a solo shot off the foul pole in RF to give the Horns the lead 2-1.
Relief pitcher Dylan Volantis who came into the game in the Top 5th to get the final two outs in relief of starting pitcher Kade Bing, racked up two strikeouts and got a ground ball out for an efficient 1-2-3 Top 6th.
Offensively, the Horns tacked on another insurance run in the Bottom 6th as Will Gasparino hit a sinking liner to CF that the defender could not get to despite a heroic diving effort and ended up with a lead-off triple. Freshman catcher Cole Chamberlain, who got the start today in lieu of Rylan Galvan followed Gasparino's triple up with a four pitch walk. That brought LF Tommy Farmer to the plate who proceeded to hit a single to LF which brought home Will Gasparino to make it 3-1 Horns.
The Horns got a final insurnace run in the Bottom 8th. Tommy Farmer led off with a walk and then advanced to 2B on a wild pitch. The offensive hero of the game, Ethan Mendoza brought him home on an RBI single up the middle to give the Horns a 4-1 lead.
Outside of a single given up in the Top 8th, Dylan Volantis cruised the rest of the game. His final stat line was 4.2 IP, 1 hit and 4K. Volantis is a guy that has been extremely impressive since arriving on campus and has adjusted well to his role as a reliever. By the end of the season, he could very well force his way into the weekend rotation, but right now, Schlossnagle wants to manage his innings carefully as he will play a large part in the rotation and does not want him to get burnt out.
BIG MOMENT
On a 2-2 count in the Bottom of the 5th with the score tied 1-1, Ethan Mendoza, not known for his power hit a ball to RF for a solo shot to give the Horns a lead, a lead that they would not relinquish.
INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE
Ethan Mendoza: 3-4, 2 RBI, 1 HR
Mendoza did it all today, laying down a bunt for a single, hitting a solo shot to give the Horns the lead, and an RBI single up the middle. Have yourself a day young man!
TAKEAWAYS
On a pretty miserable weekend weather wise and one in which the Horns offense struggled to find a rhythm, the pitching came through in the clutch for the Horns. While there is plenty of work to be done, on both side of the ball, fans should feel ecstatic that Max Weiner is the pitching coach at Texas. He has very quickly turned around a rotation that struggled to through strikes into one that is not perfect but battles.
Offensively, I just say have patience. The Horns are still making adjustments and it is still early in the season. There are a number of guys that are still working through tweaks in their mechanics, including Gasparino, Mendoza, and Winfield.
One thing that Coach Schlossnagle mentioned during post game is that the team is still playing tentative. He wants to see more aggression and to take advantage of the freedom that he and the coaches have given the players. He mentioned that currently, they are just playing a bit hesitant, like they are afraid to fail. Some of that comes from the prior coaching staff, but some of it is also belief in oneself, something that the coaches constantly preach.
Once this offense gets going in rhythm, they are going to be a very dangerous club to face as they have the ability 1-9 to produce runs, so be patient.
