RECAP

Making his collegiate debut, freshman RHP Jason Flores wasted no time in showing Longhorn fans the kind of pitcher he can be, sitting the first three batters he faced down in order in the Top 1st. Flores flashed a 94mph sinker, 88mph cutter, and mixed in a hard slider as well.

After a breakout performance on Sunday against Dartmouth, Soph 2B Ethan Mendoza led off the game with a single to RF, stole second base, and then scored the first run of the game on a RBI single to left field by freshman 3B Adrian Rodriguez to give the Horns the early 1-0 lead.

Flores came back out for a second inning of work and again flashed the stuff, sitting the lineup down 1-2-3 in just 5 pitches. Unfortunately, the Horns also went down in order and were not able to tack on any more runs.

After another solid inning of work by Jason Flores in the Top 3rd, the Horns threatened to score in the bottom half of the frame but came up empty as Adrian Rodriguez hit a deep fly ball to CF for the third out.

RHP Max Grubbs came into the game in the Top 4 and continued what Flores had started, sitting down the Cardinals in order, 1-2-3, collecting a pair of strikeouts in the process. Unfortunately, the Horns came up empty again despite getting SS Jalin Flores to 2B on a balk with 2 outs.

Grubbs shoved again in the Top 5th as he came out and put them down 1-2-3, using a bevy of sliders to generate soft contact. The Horns again got a runner in scoring position with 2 outs in the Bottom half of the frame, and yet again were unable to get the run home, thus keeping the score 1-0 Horns.

In the Top 6th, Grubbs gave up a lead off single, but came right back to get a pop up and back to back strikeouts, preserving the Horns lead and keeping the Cardinal offense at bay. Sadly, the Cardinals pitcher McKay continued to mix a slider and changeup to disrupt the Horns hitters in the bottom half of the frame.

In the Top 7th, Schlossnagle turned to RHP Ruger Riojas as the Horns were clinging on to a 1-0 lead. Ruger came in and filled up the strike zone, once again sitting the Cardinals down 1-2-3.

In the Bottom 7th, the offense came alive as LF Tommy Farmer drew a 1 out walk, bringing Rylan Galvan to the plate. On a 2-1 pitch, Galvan got a belt high breaking ball over the heart of the plate and took it deep to RF for a 2 run home run to give the Horns a 3-0 lead. Ethan Mendoza came to the plate and took advantage of a 2-1 fastball, hitting it into the Yeti Yard to give the Horns a 4-0 lead. That makes back to back games in which Mendoza, the Arizona State transfer has hit a home run.

Riojas kept the Cardinal hitters at bay again in the Top 8th, sitting them down 1-2-3, allowing the Horns offense to get right back to work.

After CF Will Gasparino grounded out to 3B, Jalin Flores hit a hanging breaking ball down the LF line and into the corner for a double. Casey Borba, who came into the game to pinch hit for Easton Winfield was late on a pitch, but hit it down the RF line into the corner for an RBI triple to make it 5-0 Horns. Tommy Farmer then got in on the action, hitting a deep fly ball to left CF that missed being a Yeti Yard bomb by about 12 inches. The RBI double scored Borba making it 6-0 Horns. The Horns had the opportunity to really break things open, but Tommy Farmer was thrown out trying to steal 3B for the 2nd out of the inning. The Horns then proceeded to load the bases as Galvan walked, Mendoza walked, and Max Belyeu got an infield single. Unfortunately Kimble Schuessler, who had a rough night at the plate struck out swinging, ending the threat.

In the Top 9th, South Carolina transfer RHP Connor McCreery got his first action as a Longhorn. He quickly got two ground outs, but ran into some command issues. He was able to get out of it though and recorded the final out to preserve the shut out win.

BIG MOMENT

Holding a narrow 1-0 lead in the Bottom of the 7th, Jr Catcher Rylan Galvan came to the plate with 1 out and Sophomore Tommy Farmer on 1B thanks to a walk. Galvan got a belt high breaking ball over the plate and took it the other way, sending it over the RF fence for a 2 run HR to give the Horns a 3-0 lead and some breathing room.

Always love a Tuesday oppo taco!

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

Back to back games, Ethan Mendoza is THE guy offensively. Tonight he went 3-3, 1 HR, 2 BB, and 1 SB.

Mendoza was one of the top RHH in Texas two seasons ago. Outstanding pickup from the transfer portal and a kid that LOVES being a Longhorn!

TAKEAWAYS

Offensively, the Horns hit the ball hard throughout the night with the exception of a couple of innings, but UIW played some stellar defense. I mean it. Both teams put on a show defensively all night. Pitching wise, you absolutely could not ask for a better night from the pitching staff. ZERO runs, Two hits. Chef's Kiss!

Onward to Vegas where some stiffer competition awaits.
