RECAP

A nice easy Tuesday night win, that is exactly what the doctor ordered coming out of a tough weekend series against Kansas State on the road and facing a short week against BYU.

The Horns got things started early, when they plated two runs in the Bottom of the 1st. Jared Thomas led the game off with a 8 pitch at-bat leading to a walk, and was then brought home by a Jalin Flores double to the gap in right center. After Max Belyeu struck out swinging, Kimble Schuessler hit the first pitch he saw back up the middle for an RBI single to give the Horns an early 2-0 lead.

In the Top 2nd, ACU would strike back, leading off with a double and then two batters later, bringing him home on a sac fly to LF, which saw Porter Brown's throw be wide of home plate, making it a 2-1 game.

Starting pitcher Chase Lummus had a quick and easy Top 3rd, but then ran into trouble in the Top 4th as he gave up a 1 out single and then issued back to back walks to load the bases with 2 outs. Freshman RHP Easton Tumis put out the fire though, needing just three pitches as he got a strikeout to end the scoring threat and preserve the Horns lead at 2-1.

In the Bottom 5th, the Horns offense broke out against new relief pitcher Dash Albus to the tune of 8 runs scored. Jared Thomas got a hanging slider and hammered it to RF for a lead off solo shot making it 3-1. After Peyton Powell popped up, Jalin Flores came to the plate an blasted a solo shot of his own to make it 4-1 Horns. Max Belyeu then hit his 7th double on the season, putting another runner in scoring position with just 1 out. Kimble Schuessler kept the conga line going as he then had a length at-bat, ending up with a single to center field, putting runners on the corners with just 1 out.

ACU went to the bullpen to bring in Chandler Freeman, but things did not get better for the Wildcats, as Will Gasparino reached base on a throwing error by the 3B, advancing to 2B on the errant throw, allowing both Belyeu and Schuessler to score, making it 6-1 Horns. A ground out by Porter Brown moved Will Gasparino to 3B with 2 outs, but Rylan Galvan was not going quietly and instead hit a hard single up the middle to make it 7-1 Horns. Dee Kennedy, who continues to get more comfortable at the plate then hit a sinking liner to left center, putting runners on the corners with 2 outs.

Jared Thomas, batting again in the same inning then hit a rocket liner off the pitcher for an RBI single to make it 8-1 Horns. Peyton Powell then drew a four pitch walk, followed by Jalin Flores hitting a single to center field, scoring two more runs to make it 10-1, and the rout was officially on.

Fellow freshman Hudson Hamilton took over from Tumis in the 6th inning and sat the Wildcats down 1-2-3 as he continues to build confidence on the mound and prove that he too needs more work.

In the Top 7th, another freshman arm, Cole Selvig came in for Hamilton and scuffled, but battled back to put up a zero on the board to preserve the Horns lead at 10-1.

In the Top 8th, Cade O'Hara got an inning of work, earning 2 strikeouts and giving up a single, to continue the domination. In the Bottom of the 8th, Jalin Flores welcomed the new bullpen arm with a lead off solo shot to the Yeti Yard to make it 11-1 Horns.

RHP Heston Tole closed the game out, sitting ACU down 1-2-3 in the Top 9th.

BIG MOMENT

In the Top of the 4th inning, ACU led off the inning with a double down the 3B line, but the runner was caught trying to make it a triple, as Jalin Flores backed up Porter Brown and threw a perfect ball to Powell to get the runner. Lummus then gave up a 1 out single, followed by a fly out. Unfortunately Lummus then issued back to back walks as he threw 8 straight balls, loading the bases with 2 outs. This spelled the end of the evening for Lummus, who made way for freshman Easton Tumis.

Tumis came into a spot where the Horns were holding a narrow 4-1 lead and ACU had something working. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the freshman Tumis needed just three pitches to end the threat as he threw back to back 92mph fastballs for strikes and then a 86mph slider inside that bucked the batter for a strikeout. Boom. Mission accomplished.

That is the kind of grit and mentality that will earn you more work on the weekends.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

Have yourself a night Jalin Flores. On the night, Jalin was the big catalyst behind the Horns offense going 4-5 with 3 runs, 5 RBI, 1 double, and 2 home runs. Not too shabby!

TAKEAWAYS

A Tuesday night in which the Horns were able to get three freshman arms work, and a couple of less used pitchers on the mound, while winning 11-1. You will take that every day! This is exactly the type of performance that Horns need on Tuesday nights against teams like ACU. Keep the approach offensively and get a bunch of arms experience on the mound so that they can help you out on the weekends down the line.

The Horns now have a 3 game winning streak, that if things go well, could be a 6 game winning streak by the end of the weekend.

The only downside was the continued up and down from Porter Brown who went 0-3 on the night with a walk. Porter is more of a left pole hitter and the wind was gusting from left to right, but this is a team that he absolutely has to use to build some confidence and get things clicking.

Peyton Powell is another guy that is in the midst of a mini slump as of late, but to his credit he was still able to draw two walks on the evening, despite going 0-3. Not sure if Powell is pressing a bit, but the Horns cannot afford for their 1-2 punch of Thomas and Powell to not hit consistently. There is a reason that Powell has the OPS and RBI numbers that he does.

The other end of the spectrum is Will Gasparino who went 0-5 on the evening with 3 Ks, 1 run and 1 RBI. The strikeouts are absolutely maddening, yes, but remember, this is a kid that is still hitting .268 as a freshman and putting solid at bats together. The more reps he gets and the more time in the box he gets is going to be absolutely vital as the season wears on and going into next year. Just think of the delayed development of a guy like Jalin Flores last year who was not getting a ton of playing time until after the mid-point in the season. All I can say is be patient, the talent is absolutely there.
