Texas senior guard Kent Perkins addressed the media during an unexpected press conference on Monday.

Perkins was arrested for a DWI on Friday morning, and Charlie Strong expressed his disappointment about the incident on Monday. Strong announced that Perkins would not play against Oklahoma State on Saturday, plus his player must perform community service and attend counseling.

In addition, Perkins did not hide from the media. Instead, he was accountable, and here are the highlights from his media availability:

- Here was Perkins’ opening statement: “I want to apologize to my team, my coaches, my family, all my loved ones, anybody that has ever looked up to me. I made a mistake. I really apologize for that. That’s not me. That’s not my character. That’s not what I’m about. I’m just ready to gain the trust back from those people. I know I disappointed a lot of people. The biggest thing right now is I just want to move forward. Forget about this mistake. I’m a leader on this team, and I need to act like that on and off the field. I’m just ready to put all this behind me and start moving forward.”

- Perkins said he addressed the offensive line, while Strong spoke to the team about the arrest. The senior felt like he let them down: “All the guys, they were contacting me and saying we love you, and all the support. Keep your head up, and things like that. It just let me know they have my back in this time. It hurts even more because I feel like I let them down. I have a lot of good people in my corner. This will never happen, ever, again.”

- Strong told Perkins that people make mistakes. He also added that Perkins is young, and this incident isn’t part of his character. Perkins said, “This is not something that I just do. It was a stupid mistake. I’m just glad that he understands that’s all it was. That’s not who I am as a person.”

- Perkins said he is grateful he did not cause injuries to anybody. He thanks God nobody was hurt, including himself.

- Gaining trust back from people he let down is something Perkins knows he has to work at. He said he is “fired up” to earn back the trust from all the people he let down.

- Perkins on whether his punishment is fair: “You never like not being out there with your team. I’m willing to take whatever punishment. It was my mistake. I did it. I’m willing to take full responsibility for the consequences and do my best, on and off the field, and help my team while they’re on the field to just get better. “

- Perkins said going forward, he will strive to do a lot of things right.

- Despite the arrest, Perkins is still a team captain. Strong did not take that away from him.

- Perkins on his thoughts while sitting in jail: “I was terrified. The biggest thing is, I thought about people who love me, things like that, and how I disappointed them.”
