For those who’ve been around Texas high school football for a while, there is quite the debate about the ever expanding number of teams who make the playoffs.

I’m in the camp that believes way too many teams are qualifying for the playoffs, and one of the consequences is first round “playoff” match-ups that are completely non-competitive.

For example, I’m at the Southlake Carroll vs Lewisville game tonight.

it’s 63-0. At halftime.

SLC scored on the first play from scrimmage, and pretty much every play thereafter.

It was 35-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Then, SLC added another two TDs in the first :48 seconds of the 2nd quarter.

It was 56-0 before even 15 minutes of game time had been played.

The refs were running the clock in the final minutes of the 2nd quarter.

And this wasn’t because SLC / Ewers were running up the score, in fact it was quite the opposite as Ewers only completed two passes beyond the line of scrimmage.

It’s a sad joke. There are 13 state titles that will be awarded this season, and 4 teams from each district make the playoffs (in 6a). This is the equivalent of participation ribbons.

Ok, rant over. Time to enjoy halftime.
