KANSAS STATE PASS OFFENSE vs TEXAS PASS DEFENSE

Kansas State ranks near the bottom of the conference in both passing yards per game, and pass efficiency. The Wildcats get the ball to Deuce Vaughn quite a bit in the passing game and that’s been pretty successful – enough that he leads the team in receptions and yards. They’re also getting the ball to tight end Briley Moore. KSU is getting some chunk plays with those two and also hitting a high percentage of the targets to those two guys. The receivers took a bit of a step forward against Baylor last week, but they just have not been very productive overall. Getting the ball to the receivers on the outside has really been a problem. Will Howard is a true freshman quarterback with no off-season, so it’s no surprise that he has had really tough time with ball placement issues, decision making and timing.

Edge – Texas ***

KANSAS STATE RUN OFFENSE vs TEXAS RUN DEFENSE

KSU struggled early in the season with the run game, but has turned it around the last few weeks and made the biggest strides against Oklahoma State and Baylor. Deuce Vaughn (former UT assistant Chris Vaughn’s son) is pretty patient and does a good job overall. He’s a bit undersized but has a good understanding of how the play unfolds, has good vision, good feel for the game. He’s not a power runner by any means but KSU will mix him in between the tackles to keep things honest, but he's at his best in the open field.

Edge – TEXAS **

KANSAS STATE OFFENSIVE LINE vs TEXAS DEFENSIVE LINE

The Wildcats have seemingly played a different offensive line every week. KSU had five senior starters last year, so they had to replace them with all new guys and have had COVID issues to boot. Left tackle Christian Duffie has really been turning it on of late. Redshirt freshman right tackle Cooper Beebe might be KSU’s best offensive lineman. Right guard Ben Adler and left guard Josh Revis were out versus Baylor due to COVID, and word is they’re probably going to be out against Texas as well.

Edge – Texas ****

TEXAS PASS OFFENSE vs KANSAS STATE PASS DEFENSE

KSU’s pass defense is typically a strength, but it struggled last week against Baylor. Like the team’s offense, the Wildcats are near the bottom of the Big 12 in yards allowed and defensive pass efficiency. KSU hasn’t been very good on third down. The defense and secondary has had really good stretches in games against OU, TT and TCU ... there have been times when they’re playing well, but other teams when they’ve been exploited. As for personnel, it’s been a revolving door in the secondary. The secondary has had some in-season attrition with COVID, some benchings. Ekow Boye-Doe has been the best corner on the team, and he didn’t even begin the season as a starter. Nickel back AJ Parker is good. JUCO transfer Justin Gardner at the other corner has been pretty good too.

Edge – Texas **

TEXAS RUN OFFENSE vs KANSAS STATE RUN DEFENSE

Kansas State holds up fairly well against the run, but some of that is because teams have been able to attack its defense through the air. It’s not an outstanding run defense by any stretch of the imagination (sixth in the Big 12), but has performed at a pretty decent level.

Edge – TEXAS *

TEXAS OFFENSIVE LINE vs KANSAS STATE DEFENSIVE LINE

K-State has two really good defensive tackles. Drew Wylie is one of the best in the league and you’ll see his name on some all-conference lists when the season is over. DE Wyatt Hubert is a known standout with 7.5 sacks. Depth is an issue with the d-line … it got hit by COVID recently so it impacts the way they rotate their interior defensive linemen.

Edge – KANSAS STATE **

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kansas State has blocked three punts, but all those came early in the year. Same with a blocked FG … happened early in the year. KSU has taken three punt returns back, but those were all against Kansas. It’s a typical K-State special teams – solid across the board and capable of making big plays.

Edge – TEXAS *
