It’s been a whirlwind of recruiting activity at the quarterback position for the Longhorns of late. On Friday, Texas secured a commitment from the nation’s top QB in the 2022 class when Quinn Ewers announced that he had given Texas a pledge. On Monday, it was news of the negative variety when Jalen Milroe announced he had flipped his commitment to Alabama.
If there’s one thing you should know about this UT recruiting staff, it always seems to have a plan. Yesterday afternoon at about 4 p.m. (a good four hours before Milroe made his announcement), Texas was already on the phone with a potential quarterback target.
“I actually talked with coach Yurcich, the offensive coordinator, yesterday,” said Houston St. Thomas QB Maddox Kopp.
The timing of this one could be interesting, and Texas could need to make a quick move if the UT staff wants to bring Kopp in. His plan is to commit on September 1, and right now he’s focused on Houston, Ole Miss, Colorado, Wyoming and Tulane. Kopp said he plans to stick to that date, regardless of what happens with Texas.
“I just want to have it out of the way before I start the season, focus on the team,” Kopp said. “I’m kind of moving forward until they (Texas) kind of pull that trigger or something else happens. We’ll obviously be in communication. If nothing happens, I’ll move forward with a decision.”
Kopp’s stock really began to elevate in early July, when he performed well at the Elite 11 competition. Texas put out feelers back then and has stayed in periodic contact since then. He’s hoping to hear in the next couple days on what Texas wants to do in terms of a potential offer. If the Longhorns do offer, Kopp said Texas would jump into his group of finalists that he’s considering.
“It’s exciting. I’m just taking it day by day. I can’t get too excited until something happens, but other than that I’m just moving along with the process,” Kopp said.
