Tyler Owens came to the Stars at Night camp at the University of Texas on Friday hoping to make an impression. When the night was over, Owens had accomplished his mission.
The Plano East product performed well enough in one-on-ones to attract the attention of the Texas coaches, and he then followed things up by winning the fastest man competition at the camp and participating in the slam dunk contest. Owens’ showing was impressive enough to earn him an offer from the Texas staff on Sunday.
“I showed them that I can match up with the little dudes, get down with them. Even though I’m big, I’m not slow or anything like that,” Owens said.
Far from it. Owens has been clocked as low as a 4.31 in the 40-yard dash and has a personal best of 10.34 in the 100-meter dash. His stock continues to rise as more offers come in – he’s up to 12 now – and Owens said he likes what he saw while at Texas.
“I’m really excited about the Texas one. All of them are special to me, but Texas feels at home,” Owens said. “The coaches, they bond with the players. I see they have a lot of fun when they’re over there, but they also get better. I feel like it would be a good home for me.”
At 6-2 and 200 pounds, Owens is regarded as a safety but said he could also slide down to linebacker if needed. His speed and athleticism make him a force in pass defense, but Owens doesn’t mind coming up in run support either.
“I like to hit people, but I can also cover the tall receivers,” Owens said. “I’m a jump ball threat, can play zone and things like that.”
Along with Texas, Owens holds offers from the likes of Nebraska, Baylor, Kansas State, Houston, Illinois and Missouri. At this point, he said he doesn’t have a timeline for a decision and wants to take his time with the process.
“I’m going to take visits to some of my schools. I haven’t made a list yet, but I’m going to get that done soon,” Owens said.
Owens is ranked as a three-star prospect.
