Texas/Oklahoma memories thread

When I think of Oklahoma the sooner I hated most was Barry Switzer. I still do.

It would take too long to say why. I'll say this he was a coach who will never admit to any wrong doing mea culpa was not his way. When one of his kids got in trouble, and there were many, he threw them under the bus. One of the best things about last year is that he had to sit in the press box and watch it. He finally had to sit on the other side of a Texas/Oklahoma blowout.

Most tame OU story I have-- a group of us stayed in Dallas after the game one year. We went to Hooters right in downtown Dallas. In the parking lot next door they had a bungee jump set up. I ate every bit of 40 wings and drank 2 pitchers of beer and someone dared me to bungee jump. I did.
Amazingly I did not puke. A Hooter's waitress must have been impressed by my intestinal fortitude because she met up with me in Deep Ellum later that night.

Damn... he sounds like Gavin Newsom.

I went in 2004 when we lost 12-0. I had a kid I taught on the team (Nathan Jones) and I had told people around me I knew him. He dropped a perfect pass from VY in the endzone. I caught hell after that.

I took my kids in 2019 after my wife died. Herman missed the bus with not letting Rojo through a pass. Safetys crashed hard every time he had it. Him being a former qb I just knew we would throw it over the top to the WR running free. Nope. We lost.
I will be there tomorrow with my new wife. Hopefully I don't mess up the juju. Hoping to see us roll them!

My first one 1978. I had watched on TV all those years (except 1974 and 1975, when OU was on probation), and couldn't wait. The pomp and pageantry, color, fight songs. Both teams were great. But Billy Sims ran wild and OU crushed Texas 31-10. All I could think of on the way home was - its not very fun when your team loses.

Cruising down I-35 from Okie land with a Longhorn Sticker on the back of my truck, I was caught in the red wave to Dallas. I slowed a bit so more Gooners would pass me. The were sticking their arms and sometimes half their bodies out giving me the down Horns. It was hilarious.
Drinking beer at 9 AM outside the Cotton Bowl, it didn't get any better than that except a Horn victory!

Drinking beer at 9am?

Ancient history for you guys. 66-68 games most memorable since I was there. First win in 9 years and owed it to a FG kicker. Vachon I think his name was. And the guy who blew it the next year in a 9-7 game although OU did very well the rest of the year. 68 was tough as the great UT back scored with about a minute to go. All vicious defensive games. Expect a completely different one this Saturday.

Did Switzer grab you by the Jussie smollett at some time in your life?

To avoid going into a dissertation about why I hated Barry Switzer.

In 1977 we won 13/6. This was a vicious defensive game we lost 2 qbs for the year in this game and a lot of limp offs on both sides. Russell Erxleben kicked 2 fgs one from 60+. But mostly it was Earl Campbell this game catapulted him into the Heisman trophy which he won at the end of the season. Finally with less than 2 minutes to Oklahoma had it 4th and 2 on our 6 yard line. Johnny Johnson made the stop the ball was ours and we ran out the clock.

The hated Switzer was beaten.

Getting back to fb. It was 1994 and we had 2 average teams that year. Late in the game Oklahoma had 4th and goal. They call time out and run a reverse of all things.

Stony Clark's only real talent was that he weighed 300 lbs. But on that play it looks like the sooners are going to score. But Robert Reed forces him to cut back. And that guy runs into all 300 lbs of Stony Clark. Texas gets the ball and runs out the clock. Sports Illustrated called it the play of the year and I agree.

Stony for all you do this Bud's for you. I hear you're doing well at car dealership. Good for you. Hookemhorns Stony

Ok.. back in the day there was always a party going all day Friday right downtown up from Dealy Plaza...no I D check just a big party ...OU folks and longhorns...and surprisingly few fights. The Hot Nuts would be playing and it was just a big brawl with few fights. The problem was getting there. I don't know about how the OU crowd got there, but all of us came up I35. There was a huge jam up just getting under that last bridge to Dealy Plaza. Cars would overheat...and most had generators and not alternators.

Anyway we were almost there finally...2nd car at the light. When this drunk kid staggers across the road. He gets to the car in front of us and stumbled. He put both hands on the hood....and the light turns green....the car just floored it!....Ran right over the guy.... We jumped out sure he was dead.....and he gets up and just walks off.....we hauled ass to the party.

Luckily, cars weren’t as low to the ground as they are nowadays. Helluva a story.

Clob. The guy was leaning on the hood of the car in front of us like he was being frisked. When the light turned green the car just floored it....Right over the guy. When we got out he was stretched flat out. He just dusted off and walked away!

The cats behind us were honking like mad.

I hear that back in the day, fights on Commerce the night before the game were very regular.

Clob, how was the tunnel before the game? I believe that in the early 90's both teams were in the tunnel at once when they entered the field.

(Late 80s) Me and a couple of friends would scrape enough money to go to Texas/ou weekend and party on commerce. We wouldn't go to the game, not because Texas sucked for that whole time, but because we were broke college boys (partying came first ;)) We'd party and pick up girls. I went about 3 times and never saw any fights other than some jawing and shoving back and forth. There were plenty of police officers directing pedestrians to go only one way on one side of the street and the other way on the other side-this is probably what kept most fights from happening.

All time favorite Oklahoma play.
2018 15 seconds left game is tied and Gus Johnson's classic call.

Earthquake!!!
Dicker the kicker!!!
Final score Texas 48 Oklahoma 45

Fox sports doesn't have any association with the SEC I hope that we get Gus to call one of our games. I'm gonna miss him.

The best team Texas ever played was the Oklahoma team in 1974. Not the best team ever but the best team Texas ever played.

Playing styles have changed over the years and back then it was the running game and that Oklahoma team had rbs in abundance. Joe Washington was the best RB Oklahoma ever had. Leroy Selmon was a monster we have trouble blocking him for 4 years. I read that he was voted the greatest fb player in Oklahoma history.

They steamrolled everybody they played except us we played our hearts out but we came up short 16/13. They were on probation and they couldn't play on tv or in a bowl but everybody knew they were the best team that year. And they ended up nc's in 1 poll.

Imagine a swimming pool filled almost to the brim with piss and sh!t. Now pour 100 gallons of gasoline on top of it.
Now throw a match on it.
