The Texas Rangers have signed all five of their five picks from baseball’s condensed amateur draft. That is good, but when you see the amounts you can now appreciate their strategy. I think we were all underwhelmed with Mississippi State second baseman Justin Foscue being the 14th overall pick. However we see now that he received a $3.25 million signing bonus, $750,000+ under slot. The 2nd round pick signed for just about $200,000 under slot. This let them pay $1.25 million to their 4th round pick, Dylan Maclean, a whopping $750,000 over slot. Enticing Oregon's POY away from Washington where he was expected to play college ball. Borderline 1st, definite 2nd round talent. They paid their third and 5th round selections way over slot as well. The fifth rounder getting nearly $500,000 over slot, another 2nd round to 3rd round talent. The third rounder getting $100,000 over slot to make sure he came to Texas.

So that was the deal, they had a commitment with Foscue to take way under slot and use that on guys in rounds 3 & 5 who were thought unsignable. At least they have a plan this year. they got a handful of good players instead of one potentially great one. Given the state of the farm system, this makes sense as strategy.
