Couldn't cut it in the Mexican Leagues
Per my discussion with Bell on recruiting, I thought I'd do a little research. Well, it doesn't look good...

2019 Class #3 Nationally

These guys should be juniors stepping into spots, or RS Soph getting quality game reps

These guys are listed based on their recruiting rank. Number in parenthesis is their overall rank nationally

(9) WR - Bru McCoy - stayed like a week
(34) WR - Jordan Whittington - looks like he's finally healthy and going to be a player!
(39) WR - Jake Smith - He gone. Never seemed to fit in here...tried to leave multiple times
(58) OL - Tyler Johnson - 1 career game played
(67) LB - De'gabriel Floyd - Retired for medical reasons
(107) DB - Tyler Owens - 26 games, 1 start - mostly plays special teams
(131) DB - Kenyatta Watson - He gone
(145) WR - Marcus Washington - Starting to play a little. Only 23 yards I think receiving, but he is out there a bit more
(165) LB - David Gbenda - 18 games, 1 start. 7 total tackles this year
(169) TE - Brayden Liebrock - 7 career games...I've seen Juan Davis out there more than Liebrock
(190) DB - Chris Adimora - 26 games, 10 starts...only 3 tackles this year. I wonder if he got hurt? Dog house? Just stopped working? Head scratcher...
(220) RB - Derrian Brown - poor guy had a stroke a few years ago...still on medical schollie
(237) ATH - Roschon Johnson - Recruited as a QB...moved to RB and is having himself a very nice career.
(250) OL - Isaiah Hookfin - 2 career games...
(289) DL - Myron Warren - 2 career games...
(338) OL - Javonne Shepherd - He gone
(17Juco) DL - Jacoby Jones - 25 games, 18 tackles this year. Having a decent start to the season
(440) LB - Marcus Tillman - 5 career games
(608) DL - T'Vondre Sweat - 28 consecutive games played, 16 tackles this year. Putting together a nice career at Texas
(628) DL - Peter Mpagi - Dude had to go to hospital with heart condition. Not sure where he is
(38Juco) LB - Caleb Johnson - He gone
(650) WR - Kennedy Lewis - got suspended and transferred to UTSA.
(691) DB - Marques Caldwell - 2 career games
(692) TE - Jared Wiley - 25 games, 6 starts. 26 yards and 1 TD this year. Hopefully getting healthy and will have an impact like I think he can
(137Juco) OL - Willie Tyler - transferred to Syracuse...no clue if he played there
(158Juco) LB - Juwan Mitchell - had some nice games for Texas...pain in the ass though and transferred to Tennessee

Again, #3 class. You had to go from Whittington at #2, down to #13 with RoJo to find guys that are contributing significant snaps. That's not good.

Obviously you're not going to hit on every recruit, but you certainly expect more than 2 of your top 15 to pan out...

3 guys had serious medical issues...that is unheard of

No QBs in this class as it were. No OL worth a shit. The best players are a WR, QB turned RB and 3* players. Big yikes.

Probably another reason why we have two different head coaches in 6 years.

I just went and checked the 2018 class and counted 15 that are either starting or playing significant snaps. That 2019 class was the one I thought that was going to send us to the next level. Boy was I wrong.

For what it's worth if we beat OU this weekend and somehow find a way to win 10 games this year we might end up with a top 2-3 class this year. I think that 2019 class speaks to the poor player development Herman and his staff were responsible for.

Whether we're 2nd or 3rd we've got to develop the kids that are coming to Austin next summer. It's a tired ol cliché but at TX it's a real problem.

This is Marcus's Washington time to shine. He's got 6 games to prove it. Let's not write him off just yet.

If we had a half ass ol we could use Jared Wiley the way OK uses Stotner. And he's a good blocker so I don't consider him a bust.

Wiley is the type of talent that would either be a star at another school or will have a nice NFL career. Hopefully this staff can leverage the mismatches Wiley presents.

The 2019 class is why we need to always be working the portal hard. Sark said in his last press conference that we need to recruit the best guys and wait for them to develop. Contrast this thinking with Chris Beard's thinking. Beard has taken what Shaka Smart left him..... maybe a 6-7 win team to a team that may be a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Sark does not have that much time.

Basketball is totally different though. You can add 1-2 dynamic guys to a basketball roster and drastically improve the team overall. You can't do that in football unless you add an elite QB.

Exactly. 2019 was almost a complete whiff.

Whittington is our best recruit in that class, but doesn't seem likely to play a full season.
RoJo is another quality player, but his playing time has greatly depleted with the emergence of Bijan
Jones got hurt...guess he's out for the year
Sweat is our highest graded defensive player. He'll probably at the least be a FA sign
Wiley is maybe starting to come on?

Washington, Adimora and Gbenda are the other players that play.

So what do we have?

A 3* DL that is a 2nd team Big 12 type guy and FA sign.

That's about it.

If it helps, you were hardly alone.

Not sure I want to say thanks for this thread but it damn sure clears up some issues.

Sark's fate will lie with his portal adds this year plus any freshman that will be quality starters next year. While the admin will say they are in it for the long haul, the fans won't be.

I'm very worried about recruiting. I spoke with someone today who is close to North Shore and 5-star CB Denver Harris, who had Texas as his top choice, has now scratched us off of his list and is no longer considering Texas. He'll most like end up at Alabama. Also, word is that Arch Manning has cooled off considerably on Texas.

This goes along with what I said before about the type of players that are attracted to UT and Austin. Why do you think players like Bruh McCoy chose Texas instead of Bama or Georgia? Maybe because he thought it would be funner?

Once there is blood in the water the sharks will swarm. Other teams have plenty of ammunition to use against Sark now. All they have to say is that you shouldn't go there because Sark will be fired in two more years and Texas can't develop talent. We have to have some stability at some point. We mock A&M for giving JImbo such a large contract which still might bite them in the butt but at least recruits know who will be their coach in three years. Something we can't say.

Agree. As much as I hate to say this, I think that Texas is a hard sell to elite recruits. Losing games is killing on the recruiting trail.

Arch Manning isn't coming here. This is a business decision. His father, uncles and Grandpa are helping him navigate this so that Arch is set for life on his own if something happens to him in college.

Arch Manning is using us. He is not coming to Texas.

Beard gets it. He scouts other teams rosters. I'm not sure sark does. He's falling prey to what the last 2 coaches failed at. He is being too complacent in year 1. He should have been on top of the shitty OL before Spring ball. He needed to be cleaning out lockers over the summer and bringing in new blood. He's way behind the curve at this point.

Agree 100%. There is zero chance that Manning is a Longhorn.

So looking at that, I see lots of skill positions high up. O-Line and D-line are not highly rated. This is what I was saying the other day. Sumlin made classes look great but they really weren’t. Linebackers looked good in this class for Texas but if you don’t have good defensive linemen then your linebackers are going to get blocked by offensive linemen getting to the second level. Texas needs to recruit in the trenches. Say what you want about Vince Young and how great he was…he was. BUT, That Texas team had outstanding linemen on both sides of the ball and could control the line of scrimmage. That is when Texas will be “back” is when they do that again. Corners can’t cover long enough if you can’t get pressure. Receivers are meaningless if you can’t give them time to get open. Fix the trenches and you will fix your problems as well as draw elite skill positions all over.

Not from what i'm reading. If we make it to the SEC as early as next year then it's going to be between Texas, Ole Miss, and Georgia. The Manning's have a really close relationship with Sark. He may not come here but we are definitely not out of the running.

The highest rated LB had a medical condition and had to retire. That isn't the fault of anyone, but you can't say -- well, they had high rated LBs...no excuse. Gbenda was a nicely rated LB. That said, one quality LB per class isn't going to get it done.

I don't think we're breaking any news here that you have to be solid on the LOS. And as seen above, the OL/DL recruiting was a mess in '19.

Tommy boy was too busy hooking up to get it done. The portal is free agency and unlike the pros, there are some excellent players in the portal.

I have to believe what he gets in recruiting, he will add to with the portal. Some OL guys that have already had a year or two in a college weight room.
I'm not so mad this year. If he does little to improve the roster and those on the roster next year........well then we have to talk about his abilities.

I'm not buying into seeing big improvements with the Texas football program. This kind of thing has been going on for 10+ years now with basically the same results every year. An 8-4 type of regular season record is our norm. May as well accept it and keep expectations low, as to not be disappointed. Texas is on the outside looking in when it comes to college football's elite programs.

True and it shouldn't be that way. There is no excuse for poor to average play for Texas. I blame Plonsky, that carpet munching stick in the mud. She and her title need to go.
