A Texas woman working at a funeral home has been charged with abusing a corpse after she allegedly castrated the body of a registered sex offender.

The Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office has identified the suspect as Amber Paige Laudermilk, 34, who was employed as an embalmer at Memorial Mortuary and Crematory in Houston. In an update posted Monday night, the office said Laudermilk had turned herself in. She is being held on a $5,000 bond.
In February, Laudermilk allegedly used a scalpel to mutilate the body of Charles Roy Rodriguez, 58. According to court documents, she stabbed Rodriguez's genitals twice before castrating him, then "stuffed" the genitals into his mouth.

Court records show Laudermilk told an embalming student, who witnessed the mutilation, "You didn't see anything," in a manner that the student "perceived to be as threatening."
Another funeral home employee saw the aftermath and asked what had happened, to which Laudermilk allegedly said the victim "had a lot going on with him." Court documents report the Laundermilk's coworkers were afraid to report the crime due to her threats.

Who is Charles Roy Rodriguez?

In 2001, Rodriguez was charged with sexual assault and given 10 years of deferred adjudication — a kind of probation given by a judge with conditions decided on by the court. He first reported as a sex offender in 2002, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety's sex offender registry.
Local law enforcement say Rodriguez died of natural causes in a Houston hospital in January.

Embalmer's license suspended after allegedly 'viciously attacking' corpse

"This case is about two troubled people: the victim who was a registered sex offender and the defendant, who is accused of viciously attacking his dead body," Precinct One Constable Alan Rosen said. "No matter what one thinks of his life, the law requires that he be treated with dignity in death."

"I don’t know the suspect’s past, but we have the utmost empathy for anyone who has been the victim of a sexual assault or is the family or friend of someone who has been the victim of a sexual assault," Rosen continued. "The facts clearly indicate she was angry and I hope after this is resolved in the courts, she gets the help she needs."
The Texas Funeral Service Commission has passed the case to the Office of Harris County Constable Precinct One for further investigation. Meanwhile, the Commission has suspended Laudermilk's embalming license and may decide to permanently revoke it.

Laudermilk's charge of abuse of a corpse is a state jail felony, punishable by six months to two years in a state jail facility and a fine of up to $10,000.
Memorial Mortuary and Crematory has issued the following statement:
"We are deeply troubled and saddened by the unlawful and horrifying actions of this individual ex-employee. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased.

"To confirm what has been already reported, this individual concealed her unlawful actions from the owners and managers. We reported this incident to the authorities as soon as we found out.
"Memorial Mortuary will conduct continuing education for all its employees this week. Now it’s a matter between law enforcement and the former employee."
