My mother recently spent a week in the hospital with a blood infection. The itemized bill sent to her by the hospital was just over $80,000. Her health insurance, Medicare, reimbursed the hospital right around $30,000. So when we're comparing the high cost of health care in this country relative to other developed countries, are we using the $80,000 figure or the $30,000 figure?
