This week, a senior Czech politician, Milos Vystrcil, visited Taiwan and delivered a powerful speech to the parliament in Taipei, echoing John F. Kennedy‘s “Ich bin ein Berliner” — or, as Vystrcil put it, “I am Taiwanese.”
The reaction of Chinese state media and the government was instant. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on a visit to Germany, threatened to make Vystrcil, the speaker of the upper house of the Czech parliament, “pay a heavy price for his short-sighted behavior and political opportunism.” Wang’s outburst triggered immediate pushback not only from the Czech foreign ministry but also from German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the French.

A tense back-and-forth in Berlin on Tuesday showed how a planned Chinese charm offensive in Europe only appears to have backfired.
On the final stop of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s five-nation swing through Europe, he was confronted by German counterpart Heiko Maas for saying the Czech Senate president would pay a “heavy price” for his Taiwan visit. Maas said he’d spoken by phone with his Czech counterpart and emphasized that Europe wouldn’t be intimidated.

France expressed its solidarity with the Czech Republic on Tuesday (September 1) after threats, which it deemed unacceptable, from China against a Czech politician visiting Taiwan. " Euro-Chinese relations must be based on dialogue, the principle of reciprocity and mutual respect, essential conditions for the deepening of our partnership, " said the spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry. “ In this regard, no threat to a member state of the European Union is acceptable and we express our solidarity with the Czech Republic, ” added Agnès von der Mühll.
