Throughout my conscious of public issues life, the fundamental disagreements were these up until the 2008 financial crisis.

Guns and butter
How much should we be forced to share with those less fortunate by law
How involved should the government be in addressing racial/gender goals not shared by all or most
Liberty vs Morality vs Security
Fiscal discipline vs pie in the sky

At this point, 10 years almost into the recovery, the game has changed beyond anything I can grasp.

Pie in the sky has won a knockout. I am middle aged but fear I will see the ramifications of this and know the kids will. It is something that has led me to consider looking around for the sake of my family, but pie in the sky has won in all democracies. It could be the fatal flaw.

Guns vs Butter is now both, see pie in the sky above.

The "how much should we be forced to share with those less fortunate by law" has morphed into a medical complex that costs much more than our military that is doing good things for people but at rip off prices with an endless amount of gaming and crony capitalism to go around. I am proud to be a man that can help the sick, but I am ashamed of the role we play in our society now. This is the most important issue facing the USA from a pocket book perspective.

The Liberty vs Morality vote was won by liberty. The Liberty vs Security issues are still being settled, however we have had no major bloodbaths here since 9/11 and people seem OK with most of what is going on. The issues at the border fall into this, and that is contentious, but there is rule of law in this nation and it is illegal to sneak across it.

The racial and gender issues have been so much in the forefront lately, and the ongoing protest/confrontational nature of the way they are being addressed is not good for national unity. We focus so much on group identity now, it has become problematic to the very idea of what it is to be an American. The government should protect everyone's rights under the constitution, and should enforce the law fairly. Beyond that, I don't see much of a role for it in these issues.
