I was doing some browsing on the internet a while back and came across an article about Richard McKenna, the author of The Sand pebbles, which was made into one of my favorite movies. Turns out McKenna, served 22 years in the Navy from 1931 to 1953 with several years in China.
I had never read the book, so I loaded it up on Audible and gave it a listen.
It is excellent audiobook with an outstanding narrator, The story captures Navy life and traditions, especially those of enlisted men, as well as the historical context of Chinese events during the period of the book.
If you served time in the Navy, especially in surface warfare, you will easily fold yourself into the familiar lives and adventures of the sailors on the San Pablo.
This is a very long book, so going the audiobook route is pretty good because you can break away at times and then come back in, or if you have a long drive ahead of you this is your perfect companion.
