I was asked to post this as it's own post. This is just my personal take, feel free to discuss...
One he is not my ideal hire. Not the first person I would have chosen. However if you are going to bring records without context, you are bringing nothing to the table in your argument.
When you are building from zero, it takes several years to get recruits that will turn into decent players. Keep in mind this means trying to get decent players to a school that had zero wins. Once you even get a handful, you have a few years before even those few decent recruits start to peak. Don't forget that we are talking about just one class, you will likely need 3+ classes with the same 2 year lead to even start getting things heading in the right direction. He immediately got them to a winning record in 2 years, largely with the player base that had won 0 games the year before he got there.
There is no coach, including Saban that would have done much better at Washington. If you want comparison look at Saban at MSU since that would be the closest comparison at that point of their career. Even then MSU is more of a football school at that time than Washington was, with more access to recruits. He was able shape Jake Locker into a NFL draft pick at Washington.
USC was in purgatory due to sanctions and Sark hit rock bottom personally. This is where some of my current concern is, simply because we know the stress of the Texas job.
Now as far as his knowledge.
He actually played the game as a QB. This has been a solid footing for his offensive side of the ball and has shown throughout his career. He has worked with offensive gurus like Norm Chow to help hone his skills and build his offensive mentality. He has worked with head coaches such as Pete Carroll and Nick Saban. Not exactly bad mentors to have. He has had 2 stints in the NFL as well for both the Raiders and Falcons.
Again I am not saying he is my first choice, but he is a good choice that brings some potential.
