Its been a while, but last time I was in the hospital for what was a relatively simple procedure I got bills from doctors I never saw or who simply looked in the room, said "How'r you doing" and left in 30 seconds without doing anything. This is a lot of the problem with hospital costs. I call them "drive by billings." You actually have a right to have your bills audited, but by the time they clear insurance and these bills drift in, sometimes months later, it is really to late to take up many of the issues. It really is a racket. Supposedly how they make up for the non-paying patients. That may be some of it but I would venture that somebody is making a killing.
