9/9/1970- Derek and the Dominoes record one of the Rock’s greatest songs, Layla. After the break-up of Cream and Blind Faith. Eric Clapton wanted to concentrate his efforts into song making, crafting and harmonies instead of his virtuoso guitar work that had dominated his work in the 1960’s. He assembled a band a band featuring Bobby Whitlock (keys), Bassist Carl Raddle and drummer Jim Gordon. As they recorded their album, the producer connected Clapton with someone whose band he was also working with, Duane Allman. Eric brought him in to work extensively on the album and said Duane was “the musical brother I’d never had had but always wished for.” The album was released in late 1970 but wouldn’t gain steam until 1972. By that time Duane had died in a motorcycle crash in October of 1971 at 24 years old.

Now to the song. Eric Clapton had met Patti Boyd, his close friend’s George Harrison’s wife in the mid 60’s. We has infatuated with her for years, leading him to periods of despair. Boyd and Harrison divorced in 1977. Boyd and Clapton began seeing each other in 1974 (after Clapton 3-year Heroin addiction) and were married in 1979. However, their marriage was rife with substance abuse, domestic abuse and failed pregnancy attempts. She divorced him in 1989 after learning he fathered a son, Conor, during a long-hidden affair with an Italian model. The story of Conor would be a soul-crushing one for Eric.
