4/9/1932- Rockabilly great and Rock Pioneer Carl Perkins of Sun Records is born in TN.


4/14/1932- The “Coalminer’s Daughter” is born in Butcher Hollow Kentucky. Married at 16 and a mother of 4 by 19, she paid her dues as a club singer and toured as 2nd or 3rd bill until finally hitting no.1 at 35 years old with this..


4/10/1936- Bobby Smith, lead singer of the Motown group “The Spinners” is born in Detroit.


4/9/1945- Famed studio drummer Steve Gadd is born in NY.

4/12/1940- Jazz legend Herbie Hancock is born in Chicago.


4/12/1944- Steppenwolf guitarist and frontman John Kay is born in Germany.


4/13/1944- Jack Cassady, bassist for Jefferson Airplane is born in D.C.

4/14/1945- Ritchie Blackmore, influential guitarist of Deep Purple and Rainbow is born in England.


4/13/1946- Soul legend Al Green is born in Ark.


4/8/1947- Steve Howe, guitarist for Yes and later for Asia, is born in London.


4/10/1950- Parliament and Funkadelic guitarist/singer Eddie Hazel is born in Brooklyn.

4/13/1951- Max Weinberg of The E Street Band and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien is born Newark.

4/13/1954- Blondie bassist Jimmy Destri is born in NYC. He is now a therapist in Seabrook, NJ.


4/14/1955- Antoine “Fats” Domino releases his hit “Aint that a shame.”

4/13/1955- Bass Guitarist Louis Johnson, who performed on albums from Michael Jackson to Aretha is born in Las Vegas.


4/10/1959- Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds is born in Indiana. He wrote, produce and sang countless R&B hits from the 80’s to the 2000’s for artists from Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, TLC, Madonna, Bobby Brown to Boyz II Men. He’s responsible for 26 R&B no. 1’s in total.


*Brian Setzer of The Stray Cats and The Brian Setzer Orchestra is born in Long Island.

4/11/1961- Gin Blossoms co-founder and guitarist Doug Hopkins is born in Seattle. He wrote many of the songs on their first 2 albums, including the hit album “New Miserable Experience” but was let go just before its completion. As the band gained popularity in ’93 off the songs he wrote, he fell into depression and committed suicide that December.


4/14/1961- Sam Cooke records his song “Cupid”, it is still considered by many critics and music producers as a “perfect pop song.”


4/8/1962- Guns N’ Roses co-founder and guitarist Izzy Stradlin is born in Indiana.

4/14/1962- George Jones release his single “She thinks I still care”, it would his signature for years and has been cover over by dozens of artists.


4/10/1963- Guitarist and songwriter Wayne DeMartini of Ratt s born in Chicago.


4/8/1964- Motown’s The Supremes release what would be the first of 5 singles in a row to reach no. 1 on the US charts. They remain America’s most successful Vocal Group with 12 no. 1’s.


4/9/1965- The Beatles release what would later become their 7th no. 1 hit in a row, “Ticket to ride.”


4/8/1964- Biz Markie is born in Harlem.

48/10/1964- Alan “Reni” Wren, drummer for the Indie/Alt legends The Stone Roses is born in Manchester, England.


4/12/1965- The Byrds release “Mr. Tambourine Man”, penned by Bob Dylan and the title track off their debut album. It was produced by Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day) who is believed to be the main target of the Mason Family’s Murders at10500 Cielo Drive in LA, though he had moved out (with then girlfriend Candace Bergen) and the owner later leased it to Roman Polanski.


4/12/1966- Jan Berry of the surf rock duo Jan & Dean crashes his Corvette at nearly the exact spot location on Sunset Boulevard that served as subject of Jan & Deans hit 2 years prior, “Dead Man’s Curve.” He would lay in a coma for 2 months and suffered brain damage and paralysis. He would spend a year in recovery learning to walk and use his hands.


4/9/1966- The Righteous Brothers begin a 3-week at no.1 on the charts “You’re my Soul and Inspiration”.

4/10/1967- Marvin Gayes records his signature song at Motown Studios.


4/12/1967- Country singer Vince Gill is born in Norman, OK. The video below is beyond hilarious,


*Early 90’s rapper Mellow Man Ace (Ulpiano Reyes) is born in Cuba. His bother, Senn Dog, is a founding member of Cypress Hill.

4/11/1968- Stuart Adamsson, co-founder and singer of the band “Big Country” who rose to prominence during the 1980’s New Wave, is born in Scotland.


4/9/1969- Fresh of his “68 Comeback TV Special, Elvis returned to Memphis and recorded a song originally called “Vicious Cycle.” It was released on this date and tells a harrowing tale of the continuing cycle of poverty, deprived youth, delinquency and violence in Chicago.
