7/31/1923- Legendary Atlantic Records co-founder Exec Ahmet Ertegun is born in Istanbul. It helped launch R&B and Soul into the mainstream. He also founded the New York Cosmos.

7/30/1936- Blues Guitar legend and pioneer of the Chicago blues sound Buddy Guy is born in just outside Angola, LA.

7/30/1941- Paul Anka is born in Ontario. He performed and/or wrote classics like Johnny Carson’s show intro to Tom Jones’ “Shes a lady” to his very own “Put your head on my shoulders.”


8/1/1942- Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead is born in San Fracisco.


8/2/1944- Jim Capaldi, musician and co-founder of the band Traffic with Steve Winwood is born in England.


7/29/1946- REO Speedwagon founder Neal Doughty is born in Indiana.

8/1/1951- Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s Tim Bachman is born in Winnipeg.


7/29/1953- Rush’s frontman and bassist Geddy Lee is born in Ontario.


Musician Pattia Scialfa is born in New Jersey. She would gain fame when she joined Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band before their 1984 Tour. She has been Springsteen’s wife since 1991.

7/30/1955- Johnny Cash records his eternal “Folsom Prison Blues” under the direction of Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Memphis.


8/2/1955 Famed Producer and musician Butch Vig. In addition to co-founding and drumming the successful rock band Garbage, he was a famed and celebrated record producer. He produced Nirvana’s Nevermind, and Siamese Dream and also Gish for the Smashing Pumpkins.




8/4/1956- The Platters’ “My Prayer” begins a 7 week stay as America’s no. 1 song.


7/30/1958- Kate Bush is born outside London. She would be the first female artist to reach no. 1 in the UK with song solely self-written.


7/31/1958- R.E.M. drummer Bill Barry is born in Duluth.

8/4/1958- The very 1st Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart is released. No. 1 is Ricky Nelson’s “Poor little fool.”

8/2/1959- Appolonia, who starred in Purple Rain and a member of Prince’s stable of music artists and groups, is born in LA.

8/1/1960- Chuck D of Public Enemy is born in Long Island.

8/4/1961- Guitarist Paul Reynolds of A Flock Of Seagulls is born in Liverpool.


8/2/1962- Aretha Franklin makes her TV debut on American Bandstand with “Try a little tenderness.”

7/29/1963- The Beach Boys release “Little Deuce Coop.” In addition to its release Capitol Records sends disc jockeys nationwide a list of car terms and phrases to unform audiences.


Elvis reaches the top of the UK singles charts for the 14th time with “Devil in disguise.”


7/30/1963- The Beatles record this song off their 2nd album that would introduce them to America when they play it live The Ed Sullivan Show over 6 months later.


8/1/1963- Rapper Coolio is born in PA.


8/3/1963- Following the massive success of The Beach Boys 2nd album earlier in March, Capitol records allow 21-year old Brian Wilson full control of the bands future productions, an unthinkable idea in the music business at that time. He produces and album scheduled for an early Fall release that includes the very 1st song he penned at 17 years old. It’s the lead off track of the album and it was released on this day.


Metallica lead vocalist and guitarist Jame Hetfield is born in LA.


Collective Soul’s lead vocalist and songwriter Ed Roland is born outside Atlanta.


8/1/1964- Adam Duritz, frontman for the Counting Crows’ is born in Berkeley.


8/2/1964- The Kinks release one Rock’s earliest great and lasting anthems, “You really got me.” It would heavily influence later Heavy Metal and Punk music. This song never gets old, 140 seconds of Rock power chord perfection.


8/1/1964- Roy Orbison records one of early Rocks greatest singles, “Pretty Woman.”

7/30/1965- The Rolling Stones release their 3rd album “Out of our heads.” It includes “Play with fire”, “Satisfaction” and this classic…


7/29/1966- While riding near his home near Woodstock, NY, Bob Dylan loses control of motorcycle and crashes. He suffers a broken neck vertebrae and goes into seclusion for nearly an entire year.

There is huge uproar after Datebook Magazine publishes an interview in which John Lennon said “We’re more popular than Jesus right now."

Country singer/songwriter Martina McBride is born in outside Wichita.

8/1/1966- Psychedelic soul group The Chambers Brothers release “Time has come today”, a 60’s song still revered to this day.


7/29/1967- The Doors’ “Light my fire” off their debut album begins a month long stay at no. 1 on the U.S. singles charts.
