10/5/1951- Bob Geldof is born in Ireland. As member of the Boomtown Rats he wrote 11 UK Top 40 hit songs, and got into philanthropy after learning of the immense famine happening in Ethiopia due to civil war and terrible agricultural policies. He along with Midge Ure of Ultravox co-wrote “Do they know it’s Christmas?” and they assembled a supergroup of British music artists to perform the song and its video. The song has raised tens of millions for charity over the years. The pair then spear-headed the Band-Aid & Live-Aid projects, with the 7/13/85 concerts in the UK and the U.S. reaching a worldwide audience of 1.9 billion and resulting in nearly 150 million in donations to Live-Aid’s cause.
10/2/1954- Elvis makes his only appearance at the Grand Ole Opry and performs “Blue Moon of Kentucky” to a an unapproving audience. The venue’s talent director tells the 19 year old Presley to “go back to driving a truck.” Elvis would turn down dozens of invitations to perform there after finding success.
10/3/1954- Stevie Ray Vaugh is born in Dallas. The famous broken string change while singing and playing is at the 2:50 mark
9/30/1955- James Dean is killed in a car accident in San Luis Obispo County, CA. His style, cool appearance and youthful rebellion demeanor would influence a generation of early Rock & Roll musicians like Elvis, Buddy Holly and Bob Dylan.
10/6/1956- Elvis releases the title track form his upcoming film debut “Love Me Tender.” It would be his 5th U.S no. 1 single.
9/03/1957- Texas’ own Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers is born in Dallas. He formed the band with Trinity University roommate Paul Leary in San Antonio.

10/1/1965- After going electric for the album Highway 61, Bob Dylan begins his tour at Carnegie Hall and introduces the public to his touring band. Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Levon Helm. They would become known simply as The Band.

10/3/1965- Johnny Cash is busted in El Paso with over 1,000 amphetamine pills. Fortunately for him, his jail sentence is suspended and he escapes with a $1,000 fine, as he was able show proof of a U.S. prescription for the hundreds of Dexedrine and Equanil he purchased in Juarez, Mexico.
Motown Records released this single from the Supremes. It would be their 3rd U.S. no. 1 single of 1965 and their 6th overall.
