As member of the Boomtown Rats he wrote 11 UK Top 40 hit songs, and got into philanthropy after learning of the immense famine happening in Ethiopia due to civil war and terrible agricultural policies. He along with Midge Ure of Ultravox co-wrote “Do they know it’s Christmas?” and they assembled a supergroup of British music artists to perform the song and its video. The song has raised tens of millions for charity over the years. The pair then spear-headed the Band-Aid & Live-Aid projects, with the 7/13/85 concerts in the UK and the U.S. reaching a worldwide audience of 1.9 billion and resulting in nearly 150 million in donations to Live-Aid’s cause.

The venue’s talent director tells the 19 year old Presley to “go back to driving a truck.” Elvis would turn down dozens of invitations to perform there after finding success.

10/3/1965- Johnny Cash is busted in El Paso with over 1,000 amphetamine pills. Fortunately for him, his jail sentence is suspended and he escapes with a $1,000 fine, as he was able show proof of a U.S. prescription for the hundreds of Dexedrine and Equanil he purchased in Juarez, Mexico.
Motown Records released this single from the Supremes. It would be their 3rd U.S. no. 1 single of 1965 and their 6th overall.
