1/18/1941- David Ruffin of The Temptations is born in rural Mississippi.


1/19/1943- Iconic 1960’s sInger/songwriter Janis Joplin in Port Arthur.


1/16/1943- Country singer and musician Ronnie Milsap is born in NC.


1/19/1944- Actress and singer Shelly Fabares is born in Santa Monica.


1/19/1946- The incomparable Dolly Parton is born in rural Tennessee in the Smoky Mountains.


1/15/1948- Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Ronnie Van Zant is born in Jacksonville.


1/16/1948- Famed Horror film director and music composer John Carpenter is born in upstate New York.


1/19/1949- English rock/pop/new wave singer/songwriter Robert Palmer is born in northern England.


1/17/1959- Musician and singer/songwriter Susanna Hoffs is born in LA.


1/13/1961- Wayne Coyne, leader of the indie alternative stalwarts The Flaming Lips is born in Pittsburgh.

Musician and radio personality and lead singer of the ska band Madness Graham “Suggs” McPherson is born in England.

1/14/1961- Motown Records signs a singing trio consisting of 17 year olds Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard along with a 16-year ol named Diana Ross. The would go on to become arguably the most successful Motown act and the most successful American vocal group with 12 Billboard no. 1 hits and 31 million albums sold.

1/17/1955- Country/folk singer/songwriter Steve Earle is born in VA.

1/13/1958- Marty Robbin’s hits no. 1 on the Country charts and no. 15 on the U.S. singles charts. It is also the 1st hit single from Burt Bacharach & Hal David, who would go on to be arguably the most prolific songwriting duos of the 1960’s and 70’s.


1/18/1958- Tom Bailey, lead singer & songwriter of new wave stalwarts Thompson Twins is born in northern England. If you’re an 80’s kid you know this tune and so many others.


1/16/1959- Helen “Sade” Adu is born in Nigeria.

1/19/1959- This platters song hits no. 1 in America.


1/13/1962- Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” becomes the only single to hit no.1 on the U.S. singles charts twice. It reached no. 1 in the fall of 1960.


This classic song from Gen Chandler is released. It would hit no.1 on the U.S. singles in a matter of weeks.


1/13/1964- Bob Dylan releases his 3rd album The Times They Are a-Changin.


1/16/1964- The Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” hits no.1 on the U.S. singles charts. NYC record stores combined for 10,000 copies sold per hour for a week. It would sell over 12 million copies.


1/15/1965- The Who release their debut single, “Can’t Explain.”
