3/15/1912- Blues singer/songwriter and guitarist Samuel “Lightning” Hopkins is born in Centerville. halfway between Dallas and Houston off I-45.

3/12/1917- Legendary co-founder of Chess Records, Leonard Chess (left along with Muddy, Little Walter and Bo Diddley) is born in Poland. His Chess label out of Chicago opened the door for blues and soul artists such as Muddy Waters, Etta James, Howlin Wolf and Chuck Berry.

3/15/1919- Legendary Jazz record producer and talent scout George Avakian (with Davis) dies at 98 years old.

3/17/1919- Legendary Jazz and Pop singer Nat King Cole is born in AL. He would go on to have over 100 charting pop hits and was the first African American to host a television series.


3/10/1929- Famed Wrecking Crew ace session drummer Hal Blaine is born in MA. He is one few “sidemen” to be in the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame and played the drums on 150 U.S. or UK top 10 songs. His list of hits played on includes Johnny Angel (Fabares), I Get Around, Help Me Rhonda and Good Vibrations (Beach Boys), Bridge over Troubled Water and Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) and scores 0f 1960’s classics.


3/14/1933- Quincy Jones is born in Chicago. When it came to music, he did it all; producing, composing, arranging, band leader and musician. A famed record producer, his productions would earn him 80 Grammy nominations and 7 Oscar nominations. He won an Emmy for work scoring the series “Roots.” He also was involved in TV producing as executive producer of “The Fresh Pince of Bel-Air.”

3/13/1939- Singer/songwriter Neil Sedaka is born in Brooklyn. He would write over 500 songs, with over 30 U.S top 40 singles.


3/15/1941- Beach Boys frontman Mike Love is born in LA.


3/17/1941- Paul Kantner, songwriter, musician and co-founder of the quintessential 1960’s psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, is born in San Francisco.

3/12/1943- Sly Stone, frontman for the soul/funk/psychedelic band Sly and the Family Stone, is born in Denton.


3/17/1944- Famed folk/rock/pop singer/songwriter John Sebastian is born in NYC. He founded the band The Lovin’ Spoonful and has written songs for scores of artists.


3/14/1945- Country & western singer/songwriter Michael Martin Murphy is born in Dallas. He was Oak Cliff HS classmates with songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard. This epic from him is too beautiful for words.


3/10/1946- Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour is born in Cambridge.


3/10 1947- Tom Scholz, the founding member, main songwriter and lead guitarist for the band Boston is born in Toledo. After earning his Bachelors and Masters in Mech. Engineering from MIT (the latter in which he began recording music) he founded the band in 1975.




3/12/1948- James Taylor, famed 70’s singer/songwriter, is born in Boston.

3/10/1950- Singer Bobby McFerrin is born in NYC.

3/11/1953- Famed record producer Jimmy Lovine is born in NYC.

3/15/1954- Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snyder is born in NYC.


3/16/1954- Stunning guitar vixen and singer/songwriter Nancy Wilson is born in Seattle. She was among the first recognized female rock guitarists in the genre.

3/12/1955- Charlie Parker, sax virtuoso and Bebop (mid 40’s jazz style) trailblazer dies at 34 years old after years of drug and alcohol addiction.

3/15/1955- 24-year-old Ray Charles has his 1st no.1 song on the R&B charts with “I’ve got a woman.” He would add 10 more in his career, paving the way for future soul singers who would mold the styles of Gospel and R&B together.


3/12/1956- Steve Harris, bassist and the driving engine behind Iron Maiden of which he founded in 1975, is born in London.

3/13/1956- Elvis releases his self-titled debut album.


3/17/1957- Elvis Presley, whose family going back generations never owned a home, buys a 14-acre sprawling property with a 10,000 sq. ft. mansion in Memphis from a local Doctor. The property is named after daughter of the homes’ builder, Graceland. The King would call this place home until his death in 1977. In 1982, it would become a museum that would become a mecca for his fans worldwide, attracting 600,000 visitors yearly.

3/15/1958- Elvis performs his final concert in Memphis before leaving for the Army. He would not perform a true concert again until 1969 when his Vegas residency began at The International Hotel in Las Vegas.

3/13/1960- U2 bassist Adam Clayton is born in south England. His bass playing is fantastic on his jam.


3/10/1962- This classic tune is the no.1 song in the U.S.


3/15/1962- Poison frontman Bret Michaels is born in PA.


3/10/1963- Singer/songwriter and bassist for Pearl Jam Jef Ament is born in MT.

Patsy Cline, country music’s 1st crossover star, is buried Virginia. She died in a plane crash that was bound for Nashville, she was 30 years old.

3/13/1964- It’s the height of “BeatleMania” as 65% percent of the U.S singles market is comprised of singles from the Fab Four. They have the no. 1 and no. 2 song in America with “She Love You’ and I want to Hold Your Hand.” The album Meet The Beatles has also sold 3.5 million copies as well. They also released thi song that would top the charts in 10 countries.
