RECAP
Well, it doesn't get much worse than that. Texas put itself in a strong position to host following the sweep of West Virginia last weekend. But as quickly as Texas played its way into the conversation, it played its way out of the conversation even quicker. The Horns woke up early and were eliminated from the Big 12 tournament with a lifeless 6-0 loss to Kansas State. The loss moved Texas to 0-5 at Globe Life Field this season. The Horns managed just two hits as Ty Rhul -- who apparently was vomiting in between innings -- and Tyson Neighbors combined to shut out the No. 1 seed. Kansas State came up with 13 hits and broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning that saw Texas use three different pitchers.
Thoughts on a bad showing in Arlington...
Brutal! Just absolutely brutal all the way around. Building up the hopes for an Austin Regional just for this to happen is brutal. The brand of baseball that this team plays in Arlington is brutal. Losing David Shaw to an arm injury is brutal. The offense going ice-cold two games in a row was brutal. Texas squandered a big opportunity this week and there's no way around that.
The injuries starting to pile up are by far the biggest concern. Conference tournaments are weird and this team has been up and down all year. Two bad games from this team are not really going to change how I view the team's chances going into a regional. But the injuries certainly will. Tanner Carlson was coming on strong as the DH and was lost for the year after he broke a bone in his arm last weekend. David Shaw left Thursday's game with an arm injury that did not look good. Jared Thomas played through back pain while back pain forced Peyton Powell to DH. Heston Tole is also dealing with an injury and was not available this week. That is just a lot for this team and especially this bullpen to overcome in a regional format.
Lebarron Johnson Jr. got hit around in a few innings but was good overall. LBJ has all but ditched the splitter and is throwing way more sliders in recent weeks. The slider looks great and LBJ certainly looks comfortable throwing it. There has been more horizontal break on the slider lately and LBJ is also mixing up the velocity with that pitch. He threw well and gave Texas a great chance to win, but it was startling to see LBJ generate only five whiffs and two strikeouts in 95 pitches against Kansas State. The Wildcats looked comfortable in the box, which is highly unusual against LBJ.

Hopefully the extra rest helps guys like Peyton Powell and Jared Thomas deal with their back pain. The top of the order has led the charge for Texas on offense in recent months and will need to do so next weekend.
Tanner Witt not throwing this weekend hurts. He will still throw this weekend to keep his arm in shape, but throwing a simulated game is not the same as increasing the pitch count in a real game. Witt had been getting better with each outing and it would have been ideal for him to get the chance to pitch in another big game before the regional.
Dylan Campbell refuses to let the hitting streak die. The game was basically over, but Dylan Campbell dumped a single into right-center in the 8th to move his streak to 35 games. Campbell has now tied the record for the longest hitting streak in Big 12 history and can break the record in game one of the regional.
Predicting what this team will do has been tough this year. It feels like you are just better off shaking a magic 8 ball. You would have thought they would have been dead after the OU sweep, they were not. You would have thought some momentum would have been carried over from the sweep of West Virginia... that did not happen. I don't feel comfortable counting this team out. The thesis was always that Gordon and LBJ could carry the team to a 2-0 start in a regional and that is still in play. The lineup still has many great hitters in it. I also don't feel comfortable picking this team to do well next weekend. Texas likely won't be playing at the Disch, who knows if the bats will heat back up, and the injuries are a massive concern. All that to say I won't be surprised if this team goes 3-0 next weekend and I won't be surprised if it goes 0-2. It's an unpredictable team in an unpredictable season playing an unpredictable sport.
