- Another non-padded practice for the Horns on Sunday which means that they will likely go to shorts, shoulder pads and helmets on Monday then maybe have the first day of full pads on Tuesday. Hopefully the Texas media relations department opens up a few more practices to the media so we can see and report on some live hitting and action with semi-real bullets flying.
- Freshmen Brandon Jones (S) and Chris Daniels (DT) were both in the pit Sunday. Jones started practice in drills but at some point early on went over to the pit. He looked fine, he was running around, backpedaling and jumping up in the air to catch footballs by the end of practice with a small soft brace on his knee. Daniels didn't look quite as spry but doesn't appear as much injured as probably just banged up judging by all the work he had to do. Strength Coach Pat Moorer was riding Daniels like a drill sergeant all practice through a series of hellish-looking drills on the rowing machine and pulling a heavy steel structure tied to the end of a rope.
- Speaking of the freshmen defensive linemen, here is how the pecking order has seemingly gone through two days of camp: Day 1: Jordan Elliott receives the starting twos snaps at defensive tackle with Gerald Wilbon taking the threes snaps at nose alongside DT D'Andre Christmas. Day 2: Flip Elliott and Christmas with Christmas getting the work with the twos. Marcel Southall and Daniels have both seemed less involved to start.
- Freshman CB Donovan Duvernay got burned a few times on Saturday and doesn't have the long-speed his brother does, but you could tell in DB drills Sunday that he is a twitchy athlete with his bursts out of t-steps and in changes of direction, etc.
- I didn't get to see WR Devin Duvernay's speed functionally on Saturday, but there was one deep ball to Duvernay on Sunday that flashed a big-time speed trait; he has a final gear at the top of his routes that burns people. If Devin Duvernay gets even with you he's leaving you.
- QB Kai Locksley actually got to sling it around some Sunday. He still doesn't look like he's ready, but he had a nice pass on a deep bomb to WR Lil'Jordan Humphrey. I couldn't tell from my seat whether Humphrey stayed in or not, but it was a great reaching grab on the sidelines at least. Humphrey has lined up exclusively as an outside WR through camp thus far and may be on his way to overtaking Dorian Leonard and becoming the primary guy behind John Burt.
- RB Chris Warren went through 7-on-7's and other drills on what Coach Strong had said was a "mild" hamstring ailment. Warren was held out of 11-on-11 team work. With Warren nursing an injury, I would expect the staff to keep D'Onta Foreman's load a little lighter this fall as a preventative measure -- especially in full-pads and scrimmage settings. I think we'll probably hear a lot this summer about Kyle Porter and Kirk Johnson for this reason.
- Neat to see Michael Huff giving Davante Davis DB-technique tips today, it's always a good idea to get the NFL "DBU" guys around the young DBs as much as possible. Davante Davis had a nice pick Sunday off of Shane Buechele.
- I think that Davante Davis and Holton Hill have improved because in 2015, it was hard to distinguish their levels of play from one another when viewing the tape objectively. To start this camp, it feels like Davis and Hill are playing at a more distinguishably high level than Boyd. Boyd has been burned a few times to start camp, once today by WR Armanti Foreman on a nice TD grab.
- Couple of nice plays from the LB group: Malik Jefferson had a nice play where he got in the backfield on a blitz (coming off the edge Orangebloods will be happy to know); Demarco Boyd had a pick in team drills and Jeffery McCulloch had a nice pick off of Jerrod Heard in 7-on-7.
