Thursday 4:50 p.m. update - Texas went ahead and continued with the process of interviewing Tony Franklin this morning since that one was already on the books, but a high-level source did indicate to Orangebloods just now that Tulsa's Sterlin Gilbert is expected to be named the Texas offensive coordinator and will be formally announced on Friday.
A second source indicated that Gilbert is officially telling those in the Tulsa athletics office of the news right now.
As we reported last night, Gilbert left Austin with the understanding that the job was his and he planned to accept it, and he met with Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery and Tulsa co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Matt Mattox last night. Gilbert is expected to try to bring Mattox with him to Texas. The discussions of Gilbert accepting the job are apparently going on as I write this update, with Gilbert delivering formal word to Montgomery.

Another day, another new twist in the Texas OC search ...
I'm told Charlie Strong is interviewing a third offensive coordinator candidate today. A couple sources have indicated that Strong is interviewing Cal offensive coordinator Tony Franklin as I type this update.
And here's where things get really interesting ...
As OB first reported on Wednesday, Texas interviewed Tulsa's Sterlin Gilbert yesterday morning. Gilbert flew back yesterday afternoon and I'm told he did meet with Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery last night. He also met with Tulsa co-OC and OL coach Matt Mattox.
Where this really gets interesting, from what I'm told, is that Gilbert left Austin last night believing the job was his if he wanted it. One source told me this morning that Gilbert and those close to him are now a bit confused at where things stand with this morning's interview.
Last night, I reported that this thing was trending well unless things went sideways at the last minute. I still expect Gilbert to be the guy, based on what I'm hearing, but we'll obviously continue to monitor today's developments to see if it changes anything on Strong's decision or on Gilbert's behalf.
Of note, I even heard there's a possibility that fourth person could be interviewed, but that's a very loose confirmation at best.
