Here are the highlights of Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck’s press conference on Monday:
- Beck said it is easier to call plays when his team can run the football. He said the return of left tackle Connor Williams had a big impact on the entire offense. Beck was not sure how long Williams would hold up on Saturday, but said once his offensive lineman got out there, the juices started flowing, and he felt good.
- Beck said he was proud of the next man up mentality of his players after Patrick Vahe’s knee injury. In addition, he said Terrell Cuney did a good job moving from center to left guard against West Virginia. In fact, Cuney graded out well and was a “champion” for the Longhorns this week.
- Beck on what quarterback Sam Ehlinger has done to win over the coaching staff: “I just think a little bit of what the game (West Virginia) called for. Right now, I think he’s more consistent moving our offense and making plays. Whether they are pretty or not, he’s being effective.”
- When asked what he said after Ehlinger’s interception on Saturday, Beck said, “I can’t repeat that.” Overall, Beck said it was not a good play, but tried to use Ehlinger’s mistakes as a teachable moment: “He has to learn. You guys heard me call him a little bit of a wild buck before, and that’s part of that. I know he’s trying to get rid of the ball, but we’re in the red zone, it’s ball security first and foremost. He has to do a better job in his decision-making process in that split second of what to be able to do. I told him that. We talked about it. We had a long game to go. Beating him up on that was not the time or place to do that.”
- The thing Ehlinger did best on Saturday was move Texas’ offense, according to Beck: “He found ways to make plays, some in critical situations. He tucked the ball and ran when he needed to. He threw it when he needed to. He controlled our team, the tempo, the emotion, the physicality, the energy. Those are the things right now that he brings to the offense. For lack of a better term, you feel him when he’s in a game. That’s a little bit of what you need right now, or we need offensively, is to have some of that. Having that demonstrative quarterback back there that’s like that.”
- In addition, Beck said, “Even after the pick-six, he’s on the headset, him and I are, about other things, too, we argue about. Like he called a protection wrong. ‘I got you, I got you.’ You don’t got me because you called it wrong. ‘I got you, coach.’ No, you don’t got me. I’m going to come down there and get you. Kind of one of those deals because that’s just how he is. That’s just him.”
- Beck is optimistic the performance against West Virginia can be this team’s offensive identity in the future.
- Beck said the grades for his running back have been pretty even this season.
- Tight end Kendall Moore is one of the most liked players on the team, according to Beck. He described Moore as a player who is not vocal, but works really hard.
- When asked about opening the playbook more on Saturday, Beck said his team has to run the football to control the game. He said it is harder to call the plays we saw against West Virginia if it is second-and-long or third-and-long.
- Beck said the extra practices will be great for the young and returning players to work on fundamentals and technique: “That’s why sometimes the rich keep getting richer in terms of college football because of the experience those guys get and the improvement they make while everybody else can’t practice.”
- Beck said between injuries and pass interference calls, nobody should stand too close to him. He was jokingly referring to being bad luck.
- Here is Beck on the offensive pass interference calls: “In all my years, I’ve coached close to 30 years, I’ve never seen them be able [he paused] … There was no flag thrown. To be able to go back and review a call, I didn’t realize you could do that. Review if a guy is past the line of scrimmage or not for pass interference, because you can’t review a throw and say ‘Was that pass interference? Can you review that?’ I never knew that. Found that out this year. Obviously, we probably have to do better.”
- Beck said he is really proud of Chris Warren III switching positions. Beck likes what Warren brings to the table in his new role.
