“Enthusiasm moves the world”. - Arthur Balfour

I was shopping recently at a Trader Joes to pick up a few groceries when I got to the checkout counter. The cashier was a young man that I hadn’t seen before. He had a huge smile on his face, asked how I was doing and started a conversation about the cold spell. He had a laugh very similar to my oldest son and when I told him this, he laughed even harder, and he asked if I needed to separate items into two bags to make them easier to carry on my walk back home. He went out of his way to make sure my experience was excellent. I was kind of taken aback by his energy and great attitude. Most cashiers I deal with seem to hate being at their counter.

I walked out of there in a much better frame of mind than when I walked in. Earlier I was begrudging the cold walk back and forth to the store.

It reminded me of an old saying when I would train my sales staff, “enthusiasm” has in the word the last four letters i.a.s.m. meaning I Am Sold Myself. This is how we are to approach our clients, that we believe in the product or service so much that our attitude is projected onto our client and they are sold too.

This young cashier really showed he believed in what he was doing, as mundane as one might think the job of a cashier might be. I plan on telling his manager the next time I go back what a fine young employee they have working for them.

Enthusiasm is contagious, let’s try to spread the i.a.s.m bug my friends!
