There are countless examples in my life where I did not follow the above quote. Many times if I had just taken a moment to calm down from anger or tense emotions, the message I was trying to communicate would have been received much better.
If my wife and I get into a spat, it’s usually my tone of voice that makes a big difference. If I’m calm and make my statements from a perspective of gaining understanding of my wife’s point of view, it goes so much better.
Shouting angry arguments just leads to an escalation of the problem and ends in hurt feelings and an ultimate apology which could have easily been avoided.
May we keep this in mind the next time we find ourselves in a conflict.
