“Business is built on relationships, relationships are built on trust, and the foundation of trust is honesty.” —Unknown

When I was a kid, I got caught in a lie. My dad was an assistant coach on my little league baseball team. At the end of the season our coach invited us to go to a professional baseball game. For some reason I don’t recall, I didn’t want to go, so I told my coach my dad wouldn’t allow me to go. How dumb could I be to think that my coach wouldn’t ask my dad why, of course he did, and my dad was livid that I told a big fat lie like that.

My dad sat me down and explained that telling that lie made him and me look bad. He taught me that telling the truth, even if it hurts, is always the way to go. That lesson has stuck with me the rest of my life. A few times in business I would have clients who were upset about something we did or didn’t do. Instead of making up excuses, I remembered to tell the truth, even if we were in the wrong and it did pay off. My clients appreciated us for taking accountability and we were rewarded with not only keeping their business but increasing it.

Lying is as old as time, our first instinct at times is to protect ourselves by covering up wrongs instead of owning up to them. But the reality is we end up hurting ourselves and make things worse.

Tell the truth out there my friends, even if it hurts.
