“Reflect upon your present blessings of which every man has many – not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” –Charles Dickens

This time of year, my must-see shows are A Christmas Carol, It’s A Wonderful Life, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. These shows portray characters who have found themselves facing hard times and become cynical about life. At time life throws you some really hard curve balls and it’s easy to fall into the trap of self-pity.

The Holidays can be a really hard time for many. Some face a job loss and fear they can’t provide the type of Christmas they want to give their family. Some face the reality of lost loved ones who are not there anymore to celebrate the season. Some are very lonely, As Charlie Brown says… “I almost wish there weren’t a holiday season. I know nobody likes me. Why do we have to have a holiday season to emphasize it?”

In my grief practice, we call these “special days” that may need an extra message of empathy from me or their grief specialist. The process to recovery is hard, but worth it. At the conclusion of our method, these days can become special days of fond memories instead of very painful times.

So, if you are not looking forward to the holidays, reach out to someone you trust and share what you are going through. Don’t suffer alone. Feel free to send me or others you know on OB so they can be there for you.

May you find peace and joy this time of year, no matter your current circumstances!
