“Bitterness is like a cancer that enters the soul.” - Sir Terry Waite
Have you ever had someone significantly hurt you? Are you stuck with the idea of never forgiving that person?
I’ve been there. I was my Dad’s executor of his estate and when he died, I got into a disagreement with one of my siblings who incorrectly thought I was not executing his wishes as outlined in the will and trust. I was proven correct, but it left me very bitter against my sibling, not just for being falsely accused of malfeasance, but for how my sibling treated my Dad during his last days.
Unfortunately, this event led me down a dark path of bitterness and an unforgiving spirit; it was eating me alive inside. It wasn’t until I went through grief therapy that I discovered my unforgiveness was hurting me more than anything I was thinking about retaliating against my sibling.
I finally chose to forgive my sibling and then the feelings to forgive came soon after. It was a huge weight lifted off of my soul and my mind was freed from the dark thoughts that plagued my ability to sleep well at night. We finally reconciled and I could finally see my sibling’s perspective clearly.
It can be VERY hard to forgive someone who has hurt you deeply, but carrying that around can hurt you more. Our forgiveness doesn’t mean we condone the behavior of the “offender”. Our Creator sent His Son to show us how to forgive so we can live a better life. I highly recommend you try to keep a forgiving spirit.
